Big Opie 32 Posted June 7, 2015 Haven't had the surgery yet, but wondering has anyone's reflux gotten worse with the sleeve? That's the only co morbidity that I have and as of late it's gotten extremely painful and it seems it's with everything I eat. I've had to up it from 20mg once in a while, to now 40mg daily. I'm just worried that I'll get the sleeve and it'll be worse then now.
lfry925 38 Posted June 7, 2015 My reflux has improved but I'm still on 40mg of prilosex a day. Doc says we'll stop it 3 months post op (july) and see how it goes. I had a hiatel hernia repaired at time of surgery so we'll see! I have read articles about GERD getting worse after the sleeve and patients have to convert to bypass. From what I understand it's uncommon but there's a whole thread on here about it. Doesn't look that uncommon to me! Oh dear. PriloseC. Not prilosex. Kindle 8,667 Posted June 7, 2015 GERD is probably the biggest long term side effect of VSG. Not everyone gets it, but many do even though they didn't have it before surgery. some patients even have to convert to bypass afterwards if the reflux gets too bad. There are some surgeons that don't do VSG if you have bad reflux preop because it can get worse. I'd definitely discuss your concerns with your surgeon, maybe even get a second opinion. Personally, I had never even taken a single antacid before surgery. Postop I was on Prilosec for 2 - 3 months. After that my heartburn/reflux hasn't been too bad, but I do have to take Zantac or Prilosec or rolaids at least a few tines/month.
ShrinkingPeach 1,291 Posted June 7, 2015 I had reflux before surgery and just took Zegrid as needed. After being sleeved the surgeon had me take Prilosec for 14 days. Have not had a single episode since. I am 3weeks post op.
