Drinking Diet Soda

Recommended Posts

Can some of you, who have had a negative experience trying to drink carbonated drinks again after surgery, tell exactly what happened that made you decide "I'm not doing this ever again"? I am SO tired of Water and fruity diet flavorings and Decaf tea!!! I want my Diet Dr Pepper back!

Interesting. I know several people who have had the surgery a couple years ago and now drink diet Coke or whatever with no problems. Hmm...

I went to a restaurant and ordered a fountain drink and could not drink it just made my sleeve feel weird and full! It's just empty calories anyway! I've been sleeved for 10 months!

This topic usually draws a lot of attention. I drink diet soda with no issues. I wish I could have given it up permanently but ended up going back to it. My sleeve is still nice and tight.

I gotten sick of the frith drinks or Water too. SO sick. In fact they were making me a little nauseous and I wasn't getting enough in. So I poured some diet come over ice and let it sit a little while to water it down some and sipped at that for about an hour. I drank about 12 oz plus whatever the ice melted ended up being. It didn't hurt and I've done it a few times since then when I just can't take the other stuff anymore. Because it's calorie free and I do t do it much, I'm okay with it. Especially because I know if I wasn't drinking it I wouldn't be drinking anything.

My understanding on diet soda, is that the carbonation can create gas and that most contain caffeine which which is an appetite stimulant.

Not so much about the potential to stretch the sleeve.

OMG it burned! I also tried a sip of beer unsuccessfully. I don't know if that changes with time. Yes, I do miss bubbles too!

Tried it yesterday at a cook out, and it felt like I almost passed on. I'm only 3 weeks out, but like others the Water is beginning to make me nauseous. It didn't go down well and it bubbled up. Horrible! Won't be trying it again anytime soon.

@@ZoeyBear all I can suggest is try it for yourself. Everyone is different, so you won't know how it feels until you try. I've tried carbonation several times along the way and I can't do it. On the other hand, I've got a friend who had bypass 8 years ago and she never stopped drinking coke (regular, no less, not diet coke).

As for soda not being good for you, choosing to drink it anyways is your prerogative. Even though it doesn't have the calories, your body reacts the same way to artificial sweeteners as real sugar when it comes to insulin spikes and triggering carb cravings. Some people have issues with that, along with the many other chemicals in soda, but you won't know until you try for yourself.

I'm almost 3mo post op. I just recently tried a Coke Zero. I found that drinking from the can its way too fizzy for my taste now. I poured it over ice and didn't have a problem. This doesn't mean that I ran out and started buying/drinking it again. I'll treat it as a "special" item. I don't crave soda like I once did.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
