Will be having the sleeve done in August. I'm considered to be a smaller patient. Does this mean it will be harder to lose weight? Will it still help w type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure issues? Will healing be longer or shorter? So many questions!

I was 38 BMI at my highest, was around 36 at time of surgery, I lost weight pretty easily and reached goal (almost) in less than 6 months.

The lower BMI probably won't have too much effect on your recovery, but it reduces your risk of complications.

As for weight loss, you probably won't be losing 20 pounds in a week like some of the higher BMI patients, but you can and will lose a lot of weight still. Probably not as fast as you would LIKE, but you will lose it eventually and that's what really matters. This isn't a race. Your sleeve is forever, so if it takes you 6 months or 16 months to reach your goal, it won't matter 10 years from now when you are maintaining your healthier weight.

Sleeve typically does help with diabetes and weight loss helps with blood pressure. In fact, I'm struggling with LOW blood pressure now!

I am a low BMI'er. My recovery was easy...no complications. My weight loss was fairly quick and steady. I hit goal in 6 months and am now 20lbs below that. Today is my one year sureversary. Some people here say that low bmi'ers loose weight more slowly...and that is somewhat true. You will not loose 20 lbs in one month, but you will reach goal sooner. In the first few months I was loosing apx. 10 lbs per month. Then it slowed to 8 for the majority of the middle months until I hit goal, then 2-4lbs lost per month since then. I am now 20lbs BELOW goal.

Started at a size 16ish. Am now in 0's. It's been a pretty amazing transformation.

Thx so much for your response! I'm having a really hard time navigating this site! I'm responding from my email! I figured it would be slower and harder. That's ok. I'm up for the challenge! Thx again!

My BMI was 36. Now it is 22.8. Best decision I've ever made. Life is completely different for me, all for the better. I walk 10k steps a day and track every bite in my mouth, even now, because this decision was due to a lifelong addiction to food that will never be over. I now have that extra tool that has made all the difference. It is not a magic wand. It is not a chicken's way out. I diet to this day. It was the extra piece of the puzzle that made success possible for me.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
