mal0712 101 Posted June 5, 2015 Hey guys. Everything has went so smooth after my surgery! I judt got back from vacation, but the past 3 days I have had a horrible cough and now my throat hurts pretty bad. No fever. I did forget to pack my spirometer... could it be pneumonia? Inner Surfer Girl 12,015 Posted June 5, 2015 Definitely call your surgeon. This doesn't sound like something you want diagnosed by strangers without medical degrees on the Internet. Pneumonia is a very real post-surgery risk.

Pneumonia is a very real post-surgery risk. I just wanna know if anyone may have developed it if that was any of their symptoms. I would hate to drive 3 hours one way over a cold
Inner Surfer Girl 12,015 Posted June 5, 2015 Don't you have your surgeon's phone number? Definitely give them a call, or if your PCP is closer you could call them.
James Marusek 5,244 Posted June 5, 2015 Generally after RNY surgery, I was sick significantly less often than before surgery. I attribute this to the massive doses of Vitamins that I am taking. But if it pneumonia, wouldn't your local general practitioner be able to help you? You might have picked up a bug on your vacation.
mal0712 101 Posted June 5, 2015 I'm at a doc now. My pcp couldn't see me til Tuesday and my surgeon is 1/2 way across the state. I decided to go to a diff doc just to make sure it's a bug or somethin

dhrguru 1,238 Posted June 6, 2015 It's an upper resp. Infection :/ I wanna go to bed. It's kicking my rear. I feel your pain. I picked up an upper respiratory infection a month out. The cough was awful for my incision sites. 2 weeks later I'm just getting over my cough! Feel better

kiss-my-kitty 12 Posted June 7, 2015 For anyone who's curious: I had pneumonia when I was a little over two months post-op, and again three years later (I'm now 5.5 years out). Pneumonia often starts out with a continual cough and a feeling of wetness in your chest/throat that you can't "clear". A high fever (100+) is common, as well as a bit of a sore throat, and body aches. Pneumonia is a no joke - even if you have to go to Urgent Care, make sure to get yourself checked out!
