I had to finally give in recently, and agree to a 5 day blast of prednisone to knock out a nasty flair of hives. (I have chronic/auotimmune hives) Well, it worked. Going into it, I knew I would gain weight, even on just a 5 day dose. But I am pretty sure I gained a good 5 pounds, and I feel utterly defeated and saddened by it. I pride myself on post-sleeve weight control, but sometimes things are out of my control, and I have a hard time letting it go. I am much happier in maintaining than having to lose again. Ho hum. Just needed to vent. I know 5 pound fluctuations are not the end of the world, but I hope some of you will understand my frustration.

Yep....I understand where you are coming from. I am going in to the pain clinic this afternoon for a spinal epidural or repeat nerve ablation to relieive otherwise relentless fierce sciatica and lumbar pain. Even though the ablation involves a more delicate laser procedure, I would rather have that than the steroid epidural for the very reason you mention.

Oh, good luck to you both! I seriously hope your health issues are resolved soon, with minimal (If any) pain. You are in my prayers, and I'm right there with you!

I'm on steroids for chronic back pain and was very concerned about weight gain. It hasn't happened but I understand the frustration behind weight gain when you haven't indulged.

I hope you are all doing better. Let me add my scary steroid experience. I was out in the sun and heat for 5 days. I got a bad rash everywhere the sunscreen was. Ok... Went to dr. She gave me a steriod shot and sent me (and my 7yo son) on my merry way. Within 20 minutes by the time I was on the Interstate, I went into anaphlactic shock from teh shot. I was able to get off at teh next exit, park, call 911 and get picked up by the ambulance safely (at least as safe as you can be when you have become a hive and tried to scratch all your skin off). Thank the Good Lord there was only minimal respitory reaction.

This is weird because while I've never taken steroids much in my life, I've NEVER had such a reaction (even the rash reaction to the heat / sunscreen) before I had my WLS surgery. No clue if it is related and my body is just different now than it was, or what.

But your post title caught my attention and hit a chord.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
