Feeling really discouraged...

Recommended Posts

I had surgery May 11th 2015 so I am 3 weeks post-op and so far this has been my weight loss...

Week 1: 5 lbs

Week 2:  Nothing

Week 3:  Nothing AGAIN

I'm beginning to think I'm not doing something right...

I'm getting in almost 64 oz of Fluid, probably 50 every day.

I'm eating about 800 calories a day to get in my 60 grams of Protein. (Is that too much for this early on? Should I cut back on real food and supplement with more shakes? )

I am walking about .5 to 1.5 miles a day. (Is this too little? Should I be pushing myself to maybe walk 5 miles since I am unemployed right now and don't get much activity beyond my walks?)

I'm just feeling really down in the dumps... I thought after I paid all that money (self pay), went through all that pain and discomfort in the hospital, and followed the rules that life would reward me! And so far I just feel like crap. 23 pounds total with pre-op is amazing, but I thought I would be down at least 8-10 more pounds by now! F :ock!

It is very normal to pause in your losing in about weeks 2 - 4. That's just the way the body works. It will pick up again as long as you are following your plan. If you are following your plan, just relax, stay away from the scale, and focus on adjusting to your new life. Here's a timely post from Alex:

Oh my goodness!!!!!!!!! I came on here today to post asking about this!!! You're not going to beleive the similarity in our stories;

Sleeved may 12th on self pay also!

Week 1: lost 8lbs

Week 2: lost nothing!

Week 3: lost nothing! (Actually gained 2.5 and lost that but that doesn't really count overall)

Wow it's so nice to feel like I'm not the only one!

I was eating about 400-500 cals and now am up to 700-800, which helped me Lose the 2.5 gain! I get my 2 liters (67oz) and walk about 2-3 miles a day. Maybe it's just how we're made?? I don't know I just feel some relief seeing your post

Oh my goodness! I am here! Lost 40 pounds pre op. Had surgery on 4/27/15. I've only lost 25 pounds. I work out 6 days a week and eat 400 to 500 calories a day. I haven't lost any in almost 2 weeks. So discouraged.

I had my sleeve on 12 May and exactly the same thing has happened to me!

Week 1 lost 8lb

Week 2 nothing

Week 3 nothing!

Very very disheartening but apparently it's your liver hanging onto every bit of glycogen it can. Our weight loss WILL start up again.

(I hope!) :)

Hearing that you guys are going through it too makes me feel better/normal.

I just want to take my scale and throw it like a discus!

I've been sleeved for a year & go thru the same thing. My first stall was at 3 weeks for about4 days. I stall every 4 to 6 weeks for about 3 or 4 days. Drives me nuts. When I was allowed 800 calories after 6 or 8 weeks post of I didn't stall as much. At 6 months I was allowed 1,000 calories but I have had trouble staying under 1,200. I've been in a stall for about 6 weeks but I refuse to give up. I started reading a book by Kaye Bailey called 5 Day Pouch Test. It's really for people who are a year or more post op and I have learned some really good stuff. Hang in there, it will be worth every stall you have to deal with.

Anybody stopped yourself to measure your BMI again, with all the stuff like diet and Protein and the exercise why is it not considered that some of it is turning into muscle? It does weigh more than fat, besides for many of us it took years of bad habits to get this way, so ever said that even with surgery it would be easier? It's very hard to do the right thing right? Focus on health and feeling better, don't let the "SCALE" rule your life or happiness, look at the big picture YOUR STILL HERE AND STILL TRYING! I started at 388 in March and I am 7 days from surgery, I weighed in at my surgeons office today at 349lbs, and was told I will be between 328-333 by surgery date, and what was I thinking? " enjoy the moment it's gonna get harder " don't give up, relax, think positive!

Stalls are real. We all have and will experience them. I know it's frustrating, but please do not let them discourage you. Just stay the course and the weight will come off... slowly. Stay positive and focus on your good eating and being active every day.

I think the stall has come to an end!!!

Today I woke up at 218.4 which is 1.2 less than yesterday and a new number for me so I think my 16 day stall has finally ended!!! WOOOHOOOO

I saw my nutritionist on Wednesday. Told her my issues. She did advise that my body has underwent so many changes so quickly (delivering a baby and then weight loss surgery) that it has to have time to catch up. Advised that stalls were very real and that this will not be the last one. Advised me to track my measurements as well as weight but not to focus on the pounds. I was going to try to not weigh for 2 weeks but every day the scale beckons me so I can't stay away from it. I have decided that I cannot let it dictate my mood. That is easier some days than others but I am trying. I am just going to keep up my workouts and eating right.

That's what i tried to say! Seriously it's about quality of life and not a time frame issue, even in pre op I am measuring improvements (quality of life) and not pounds, my knee pain is subsiding slightly, I caught myself bending over to tie my laces, etc. I have worked in a psych setting for 16+ years and I used to give a class in the evening, where I taught people to pick a few small accomplish able goals everyday, then little by little move up in the goal challenges, accomplishing smaller goals for several months changes your way of thinking without even knowing it, eventually you are setting major fails for yourself without the added stress, people like you who have already undergone the surgery and are doing everything your supposed to are hope and inspiration for people like me, people who hate yet to have those experiences, and by the way please try and research your workout schedule, people who work out and get rest periods in between tend to heal, and progress faster than those who work out 5 or 6 times a week, it also gives time for your body to recover......

Week one: -3.1

Week two: -2.2

Week three: -2

Not jazzed about this at all. I see people at the same number of days out who have lost 20 or 30 pounds. How can you be bad at eating nothing? I have had no pin, nausea, or tiredness. I feel fine.

everyone assured me I would lose weight. It's very depressing.

This isn't a stall btw. This is "has not lost any significant amount of weight since surgery." I got 80 percent of my stomach excised and can't eat for less than a ten pound loss. Yippee.

This morning I wanted to throw the scale at something or someone. I can't imagine how I could gain 2.5 lbs not eating more that 550 call a day. This is so discouraging! I am at yet another emotional low in this process. List 25 before surgery on 5/22, lost 10 lbs the week after surgery and now going into my 3rd week, no weight loss, but a gain. I also have a new pain in my lower left stomach this morning. I still have no energy.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
