Last Minute Change- NERVOUS!

Recommended Posts

Hi All-

For the last few months my doctor and I have been operating under the assumption I'd be having the gastric sleeve surgery next week (June 9th). I've done lots of research and feel very prepared to be successful after surgery. However, in my pre-op meeting today we went over my Endoscopy and medical history results and he now thinks it would be better for me to go with the Gastric Bypass surgery because he doesn't want my reflux to get worse.

I fully trust him and his judgement, it was just a bit of a shock for me, especially since it's only one week away!

To be honest I think I'm just overwhelmed that it's all finally happening. Regardless of which organs they stitch together, I just want to make a decision to live a healthier, happier lifestyle.

Any anecdotes or words of wisdom?

Thanks!
Brittany

I have heard of many people in here getting the sleeve only to have to go back in and get the RNY done after a few years. If you have reflux, then the sleeve will make it work because your stomach is funnel shaped and allows food to move back up. I had the RNY done last week. I liked the fact that the RNY has been done since the 1960s and there is so ugh research showing the success rate, where the sleeve is still a generally new procedure with no long term studies completed as it is just over 10 years new. You need to do what is right for you.

I wouldn't look at it like it's a bad thing....originally my surgeon advised I would be a good candidate for the Sleeve...but I was feeling "some type of way" just knowing...half of my stomach was going to be cut off and thrown in trash. I guess I was more of less thinking....god forbid if anything occurred and I needed things reversed...with the sleeve that was not going to happen. At least with the "gold standard"....it could if it needed to happen. I was glad my upper GI displayed acid reflux. Well all in all I'm at peace and ready to get the party started....I have my surgery in the morning!

Best of luck to you...ALL WILL BE FINE!

Thanks yall, you're both right! I actually went in to my first appointment thinking I would do the RNY, to be told sleeve would be better, and now back to RNY. My doctor warned me today about dumping syndrome and I'm actually grateful to have another reason to keep me from eating all the bad stuff again (definitely don't want to make myself sick!). I think it's just nerves kicking in!

@@caligul good luck tomorrow! Let us know how it goes :)

Generally RNY is prescribed for those with serious acid reflux. I had acid reflux prior to surgery. I am 2 years post-op on RNY and I no longer experience acid reflux.

Good morning. Exact same thing. After the endo we discovered I have Barrett's Esophagus.

I wanted the sleeve. Everything I researched and learned and prepared is for the sleeve. But it won't work so I'm doing the bypass. I'm starting over learning everything I can. This one seems to be a bit more complicated as far as recovery and dumping is concerned.

But I can do this!

The exact same thing happened to me and I am so very glad that I had RNY. I have not had a single episode of reflux or heartburn since my surgery and we discontinued all reflux medications 30 days post surgery.

Woot woot!

You will be so happy when that problem is gone!

Good luck!

Hi. I was in the same situation. My first surgeon must be getting kick backs from the sleeve because that's all he pushed. Even though he knew I had terrible GERD, double hernias, and no gall bladder. I went to another surgeon for a second opinion and he went over all the procedures in depth and told me that the RNY would be best for someone with GERD. He said the sleeve sometimes makes it worse. I'm glad I had this information and my date is getting close as well on June 10. Congrats on your new life.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
