@@MissLiss you might want to check with your NUT on drinking 50 grams of Protein at one time. It is my understanding your body can only absorb 25-30 grams of protein and anything above this amount is wasted.

I asked my PA about this today because I didn't want to be wasting my protein and he had never heard of the body only being able to absorb 25-30 grams of protein at one time.

My Protein Shake contains 32 grams per serving and Isopure has 40 grams per bottle. Inquiring minds want to know.

I will ask my NUT when I see her as well.

I am also having a hard time with Protein. I am 13 weeks post op. My sleeve can't tolerate the Protein Shakes, Protein Bars, powder and Isopure have a funny whang in the taste which makes me ill. I'm really struggling with this. I know I am not getting anywhere near the 60 gr but I just can't figure out what to do. We have spent a fortune on all of these products which I can't tolerate

I'm piggy-backing on this topic. I am 9 weeks post-op and my PA wants me only eating things I can eat with a fork. No more Protein shakes (and no Protein bars).

Based on no Water 30 min before, during or 60 min after meals, how the H do you eat and drink??? I need 100+ hours in a day to get all the fluids and Proteins in without breaking some kind of rule. A yogurt is 12(ish) grams of protein, but eating 1/3 gives you 4 grams. Same with everything. I can't even eat a whole egg at a time. Am I missing something?

As it is, I'm still doing a Premier Protein every morning to at least have 30 grams in. Thanks, and sorry OP for butting in :)

8 weeks out and no Snacks allowed. Surgeon wants the Protein primarily from real food but will allow one Protein Shake per day as a substitute for one meal. Luckily I can get in 4 oz of protein per meal and 1/2 C of fruit added at one meal and 1/2C low carb vegetables added to another meal. I feel very little restriction but continue to lose 3-4 lbs a week. I do walk three miles seven days a week however.

How do you get enough Protein in? I eat 2 meals a day, 2 oz each and mostly Protein. Then a 23g Protein shake for lunch and another 23g shake before bed. So maybe 50 g per day. I read people are getting 60-80g?!

How far along are you? Why are you only eating 2 meals a day? I do 3 meals and an afternoon snack if needed. I get 70 -100 gms of protein a day. I am 9 mths. When I was first sleeved it took a week or 2 until I was able to hit 60gms regularly. Once I hit that I worked on increasing to at least 70. I work out 4 -6 days a week and need that much to maintain my energy level.

Any of the studies I have found regarding how much Protein the body can digest at a time have all been from a weight lifter perspective. It is how much Protein can the body optimize for building muscle mass at any given meal without storing any additional. If I remember correctly the additional protein is converted and stored for quick access. It is no immediately peed out.

Many Protein shakes were originally developed for the body builders and many of the studies were done for those users. If I remember correctly a number of these studies were done over 20 years ago.

I would assume for most of us on this board the goal is slimming not bulking. It is likely these studies do not apply to bariatric patients.

I also seem to remember that newer studies have disproven the body not being able to digest more than a certain amount of protein at a time.

I will need to try to dig up some of these studies to re-read and link here when I am not at work.

Basically, at 17 months, it breaks down to three meals at 20 grams each, two Snacks at 10 grams each. By keeping meals to 30 minutes, and Snacks to 15 minutes, there is plenty of time in the day to sip, sip, sip. Further out, you can drink more fluids at a time.

Newly post-op, i was barely getting in an ounce every fifteen minutes (4 ounces an hour) Now it's easy to drink a cup of tea or Water in 1/2 hour (16 ounces an hour). I can easily get in 80-100 ounces of Water daily now.

One of my favorite Protein Snacks is Simms Beef Jerky which I buy at Aldi's. I also love powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury Protein powders, esp. since they have a chicken Soup flavor that works well for lunch or snack at work for me. I aim for at least 100 grams of protein daily per my surgeon and NUT. Still can't eat much more than a 1/2 cup at a meal, but will pick at some veggies within the hour following supper. I've not been able to get my min. protein in just with real food; it takes at least one protein shake a day to get close. Other favorites are: cottage cheese, cheese sticks, Greek yogurt, black Beans prepared in a tasty fashion, beef, chicken, pork loin, Peanut Butter, Protein Bars.

Good luck! It does take awhile to reach protein and liquid minimums, so do the best you can.

Thanks for this! This has been the most helpful response by far. Gives me a lot of good suggestions. I didn't realize until the other day that jerky has so much protein. ????

You can also always drink a Protein shake as a snack, they don't always have to be for Meal Replacement.

ridingrae,

What are you eating for your 2-ounce meals? An ounce of tuna has 7 grams of Protein, an ounce of chicken breast has 8 grams, and an ounce of ground turkey has 7 grams. If you have one ounce at each of your 2 meals and add that to the 46 grams you’re getting from Protein shakes, you would be at 60 or more grams for the day.

As the others suggested, you might want to consider eating/drinking a fifth time during the day if you can’t get enough protein from your current 2 2-ounce meals plus 2 Protein Shakes.< /p>

Quest and other Protein Bars can also help, especially if you want something sweet and don’t mind the processed foods. A Quest Protein Bar has 21 grams of protein, or 10 grams per ounce (a half of a bar). Protein powder in tea, Soup or anything else can help.

Drinking another shake might be the answer, especially since you’ve found one that agrees with you.

Regarding the discussion on amount of protein that can be used at one time: I believe the figure that goes around is 15 to 20 grams at once. However, that’s the amount that your body uses for things you think about protein being used for, like supporting muscle mass. Any extra you eat isn’t just discarded by the body. Your body still gets calories from it (just like you get calories from fat and carbs) and the calories (energy) can be stored as fat.

There is some thought that the body cannot absorb more than 20 -30 gms of protein per hour. That does not mean we don't still need to get in a min of 60 gms a day. It just means spacing it out so we are gradually getting it in throughout the day.

Typically my morning protein shake come in at between 31 -38 gms of protein. However, I tend to drink half before my workout and the other half after. This way I fuel my body pre workout and during recovery post workout. lunch is then anywhere from 10 -20 gm of protein. My afternoon snack may be another 5 -10gms and my dinner another 10 -20. This enables me to get in 75 - 100 gms of protein each day.

Try eating boiled peanuts, which are legumes and contain a lot of Protein. They mush up well in the mouth.

You can buy some at grocery, and just heat in microwave.

Yum Yum!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
