Protein shakes vs milk

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone!

I want opinions about Protein sources. I am almost 8 weeks post op n I can tolerate milk. My question is will it be a biggie if I stop the shakes n focus on high protein foods n milk for my source of protein?

I don't see why it would be a problem, especially if you are able to reach your Protein goals with healthy foods.

I was sleeved April 20 and my Protein goal is 100 grams a day. Some days are easier than others in reaching my goal without supplements.

I don't see why that would be a problem. If you can meet Protein goals with whole food then go for it! I read somewhere about people mixing powdered skim milk or unflavored whey Protein in with their milk to boost the protein level.

Personally, it would be difficult for me to meet protein goal without my shakes. For the first 6 months my restriction was too tight to be able to eat enough. Now a protein smoothie is just habit, and I use the smoothie to get in 10g of insoluble Fiber for my Constipation issues. i also insist on getting in plenty of veggies, fruit and whole grains, so I still don't have enough room to get in all my protein from food.< /p>

Not sure which surgery you have had. I am banded and find it easy to get all my Protein from foods.

Your Protein requirement is the combination of the protein you obtain from food combined with the protein obtained from supplements (protein shakes, protein bars). As your meal volume increases after surgery, you have the opportunity to shift away from using Protein Shakes to eating your protein from other sources.

I personally still drink milk and I am one year out. I find when I drink a cup of milk I stay full longer and I don't want to snack. I still have at least one Protein Drink a day because I prefer too.

I found that mixing Premier Protein chocolate and vanilla 50/50 makes it taste close to chocolate milk. I start every day with that as my morning Breakfast 8 ounces.

One hour before bedtime, I make a mixture of three-quarter cup skim milk with 1/4 cup low-fat chocolate milk. Helps to settle my sleeved stomach before sleep.

Combined counts as 16 ounces of Fluid intake, so I drink 48 ounces of H20 during the day to get my total 64 ounces of liquid in each day.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
