Drinking wine after surgery!

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone! So, I am about 3 weeks post op and I feel fantastic. I feel that I am ready to have a glass of wine, from all the research I've done there's really nothing that says I can't have wine now, my doctor did not tell me how long I had to wait so I feel it is a good time to have a glass of wine if I want one. Are there any reasons I should not have wine this soon?

Just be careful because now that you're stomach is so small, you absorb everything so much faster! The one thing I've heard is alcohol poisoning (even from wine) It's more lonely to happen than before. If you do decide to.. take it slow and listen to your body. You're going to get "warm" a lot faster than before. Just be careful!!

My brother in law had gastric bypass surgery. He lost 170lbs. Did pretty good until he started drinking wine again then he has put a good bit of weight back on. I think its a very slippery slope. I personally have gone through way too much to let something hinder me at this point. Wine has a lot of sugar in it. Which is nothing but carbs.

Too soon. You're still healing. You need to worry about getting fluids (NOT ALCOHOL) and Protein right now. Why do you want to deprive your body of much needed nutrients for empty, non nutritious calories??

Call your surgeon. He will tell you the same.

@ kimmiethomason1, Don't make the mistake I did. I wish My doctor would have told me to wait 6 months but instead he said 6 weeks. Since I have started drinking the wine my weight is not falling off. At a point now where I have to limit to once per week, or every other week. NOT 3 times per week as I do now.

Sad I started drinking ..empty calories, adding sugar & carbs not losing weight!!!! i'm 5 mo out. If you can wait hold out as LONG as possible.

Three weeks is soon IMHO. I would not have been ready. I was a dry red wine drinker before but found that after surgery it just doesn't typically sit well. White is better now if I do wine, or even a cocktail made without soda. I do find that alcohol will put weight on me faster than ANYTHING else. Even 1 drink per night with calories worked into my day can derail my progress. I'm in maintenance now for the last year. If I dial it back to just weekends and watch the quantity, I can maintain\lose a little to stay in my zone relatively easily. I echo what others have said about the empty calories. If you want to maximize your WLS honeymoon period, try and leave it alone as long as possible!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
