Any teachers in here?!?

Recommended Posts

I was hoping to get the sleeve done during the summer, however, I couldn't count my pcp's documentation because I needed 6 consecutive months.... So now it's looking like October.

This is an issue as I'll probably have to wait until November or December until I have a decent break to help with recovery....

Any teachers with any advice, tips, etc?

Im an assistant teacher, i would recommend during thanksgiving or any holiday, your job is harder and you will need the time off.

I agree but Christmas break would probably be better because that's 2 full weeks. I thought I was going to have to have mine originally during that time because I'm having a revision from band to RNY, but because my band didn't slip I'm blessed to be having everything Done on the 15th. Summer is perfect for recovery. I hope things work out for you! #teachersrock

I'm a teacher and was planning on having my rny last December. There was a delay and I'm now having it June 19th. I think Christmas break will be your best option. You want to give yourself as much time as possible to recover.

I work in the school system and started this journey in January when my insurance kicked in for the new year. I was given the option of surgery as early as March but I decided to wait I until summer so I would have plenty of time to heal and adjust to my new way of life. I'm scheduled for rny on June 15th.

We are date twins! How cool! Have you started your pre-op diet yet? I have and I'm miserable!

I'm a Teacher and my last day of work was May 26th and my surgery was the 27th! I had RNY and am glad I'll have all summer to recover but if I didn't have that option I'd probably schedule for Christmas break and take an additional 10 days either before or after that giving you a little over 3 weeks to recover. I think the people who say they are back to work after day 6 of surgery are those who work in an office setting that don't deal with people throughout the day. With the way I'm feeling I can't imagine returning back to school dealing with kids, parents and Teachers all day. I'm not sure what you teach I'm a Special Ed Resource Teacher so my days are a little more laid back but even still, I'd want as many days as possible....good luck!

I'm also a SPED teacher and like you said even with the laid back moments, I couldn't imagine going back after one week. How are things going for you now, post-op?

I'm also having my rny on the 15th. Guess that makes for triplets. Ha ha ! Started my pre op diet yesterday very different from the usual. Wish you both luck. If you would like my wife had a sleeve about a year ago and I have been going to two support groups for about 6 months and can maybe answer questions if you have any. Once again best of luck to you both hope to keep in touch.

I'm an elementary teacher- sleeved 4/21/15 week before April vacation. Took week of surgery off and vacation and hoped to go back afterwards. Recovery was hard and I had some complications. I needed an extra week, which I took, but it was very stressful.

If I had to do it again, I would not change when I did it (I didn't want my whole summer vacation to be recovery) BUT I would plan on more time off, especially if you are with little ones. I was tired and weak and cranky and going back was very taxing on my patience :)

I teach and could have done It a little sooner, but school is out Friday June 12, and will have bypass on Tuesday June 16. Looking forward to having plenty of time to start the new lifestyle and habits.Christmas would have been my second choice.

I could have written this post, except that my surgery is July 6th because we have a beach vacation the week of the 20th.

@@myjourneyagain I'm actually doing really well. If I didn't still have pain I'd be doing great! I'm still trying to get a good routine of getting my fluids and Protein in but I'm just not hungry or thirsty at all ever so hopefully I'll do better with that in the coming weeks. Good luck to you!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
