Dizziness, hotness, tiredness after eating soup?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone! I was sleeved on Tuesday and I'm on full liquids. I had some clam chowder today (my family went out for lunch). Obviously I only sipped the liquid and I didn't have very much, but after many sips, I felt like my face and head was very hot, I was dizzy, and my stomach didn't feel good. It wasn't nausea and it went away maybe ten minutes later. I can't tell if I just took a few too many sips and this was my sleeve's way of saying "too much!", if it had something to do with dairy/ingredients, or if it was something more serious? I'm not lactose intolerant or anything, and I've been doing fine with Greek yogurt, but the symptoms (and trip to the bathroom shortly thereafter), made me think of that. Thoughts, suggestions? Should I be worried? I feel totally fine now but I wanted to get some input do I can avoid that in the future!

That actually sounds kind of like dumping syndrome. And yes, people with the sleeve can get it, although it is much more common with bypass. If you think it could be dumping, you definitely want to eat slower, and smaller amounts, with food that is either very rich or very high in sugar. Clam chowder doesn't seem like it would be high in sugar, but it certainly could be rich.

The standard advice my team gives out when you have an adverse reaction to food:

--wait a couple weeks before trying that food again

--eat slower

--eat smaller amounts

--take smaller bites

Good luck!

This happens to me too- nothing to be worried about! This is a version of dumping and it was very likely caused by your cream based Soup. I am not lactose intolerant, but certain cheese, creams, sugar, oils, and milk fats will cause a very similar reaction. I get really hot, my skin flushes, I feel nauseous, my heart races, and then 15-20 minutes later it goes away. For me, I used to have this reaction with everything that had fats or sugar, however now only sugar tends to give me the hot flash, pounding heart feeling while the fats and oils just make me feel hot and then barf.

I'm about 20 months out and I avoid cream based Soups because I know they will make me sick. The low fat broth versions usually go ok as long as there is no butter in them and I have never once had an issue with a Tomato based Soup. My sleeve just does not do creams, sugars, fats, or milk with a fat content, and perhaps yours may not be tolerant of some of these things either. My sleeve also hates fish, so if it was clam chowder, perhaps the oils of the fish in the broth may have also contributed to feeling poorly as well as the starchiness of the potatoes. My bet is the cream because of the fat content, but anything in the soup may be something that your stomach doesn't like.

Shorter version though, you didn't do anything bad and there's no reason to be concerned!

Thank you both!! I knew that dumping was an option with the sleeve (of course I had the "it won't happen to me" attitude), and I'm glad to know what it is so I'm not worried. I've had some other cream-based Soups and I've been fine, so I'll keep an eye out for other things that bother me.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
