I'm in Southern California and have Kaiser. I'm going to start the 24 week Options classes. I had a couple questions, does anyone know if WW and Nutrisystem count as the supervised diet plans previously tried? Also, I've read that during the classes you need to lose 10% of your weight to be able to get approved for the surgery. Is that correct? It seems like if I can lose 30 pounds in 24 weeks, they'd just tell me to keep doing whatever I was because its working. Any thoughts and/or assistance would be appreciated.

Thanks all!

Nik

Hello there,

Congrats on your start! :) I'm pretty much in the same situation as you are. I'm in Southern California Kaiser taking Options classes. I'm taking mine at the Kaiser in Corona and I only have 4 more classes to go (woowhoo) it is only 12 weeks long and we have to lose 10% of our weight as well. I was told that any commercial diet was considered a supervised diet plan previously attempted. As for the weight loss, an amazing success story was told my first day of Options classes. A man attended 24 week options classes and lost 90lbs and still went though with the surgery. Losing the 10% weight is just proving to them that you're committed and willing to make the change to a healthier lifestyle. Remember, all Kaiser's have different requirements. It is dependent on the city, your nutritionist, and ultimately your surgeon. Hope this helps. :)

Regards,

Maria

@Nikki_B@Mariaaa wow, hope you guys can share info! Love this site for these connections. Good luck both of you -- it can sometimes seem like a long haul but the time goes by quickly and it's amazing how different things will be a year from now.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
