medic alert braclet or necklace

Recommended Posts

Another point I should make, I wear the Bracelet and not one single person had asked me what it is. In fact, I had to point it out to my doctor and he said "what is that ". When I told him it was medica alert he said great. It is feather light, and I never take it off even going thru airport security. Hope I have convinced a few of you can be a life saver. Doddie

Ok, I'm seriously considering it. Maybe I'll ask for one for Christmas!

I am guessing MedicAlert is better to have (for 'privacy's sake) than something with "Lapband" or whatever on it... with how it can contain all your medical history, contacts, etc. But then, since I'm cheap/broke, I could just get one now that DOES have the 'no blind intubation' and 'adjustable gastric band' on the back, or something, and hope no one sees. Wish MedicAlert didn't require a yearly subscription too. :phanvan

Hmm... dilemas.

Which 'model' do you have, Doddie? I'd have to have something VERY light and barely noticable to me, to wear ALL the time. Do you shower with it, and everything?

I have the basic stainless steel and it is featherweight light. If you go on the website, you can see it. The front is a very styleish (sp) medical symbol and on the back are listed the band, diabetes and up to 5 medical problems. A medic would recoqnize it instantly but no one can read what is on the back unless you let them. And I eat, sleep and shower with it on. I even go to the aqua fit classes with it on. It never comes off. It is so "unnoticeable" that I had to point it out to our aqua fit instructor and lifeguard. Frankly, if you have the band, the literature recommends you have the medic alert Bracelet or necklace or broach. It gives me a very nice reassured feeling of safety. Doddie

Argon, they don't require a yearly subscription. YOu can order only the Bracelet. I have the yearly subscription because I need to update the medical problems and medication frequently. Also, there are other benefits if you go to the website you can read them. Doddie

I have a medic alert anklet, but I just ordered it from a US company on the web. If you google medic alert Bracelet, you get tons of companies that make them. Mine says "allergic to penicillin and gastric lap band inside." It is made of stainless steel, is thin and feminine and I can't tell I'm wearing it any more. I don't have to pay yearly dues for this either. It's a good idea, and doesn't cost much. I think I paid $30 US for it. The best part is that as I lose weight, I have had to tighten it a few times just like my watchband!

Good morning, it is 8:51 am in Vancouver BC. I noticed that you have approximately the same amount of weight to go as myself. Are you planning on another fill? I go July 12 to the vanc. doctor who last time failed to insert the fill because the port was offon an awkward angle. I flew to Toronto and they filled it immediately. I sure hope I don't have to fly back to TO because of the costs $1,000.00 Pretty expensive for a fill Doddie

Hi Doddie,

I actually have had a number of fills and a few defills. It seems that I have a sensitive stomach around the band area. If it gets irritated with a food stick or vomiting it swells up and I start to have problems with anything but liquids. Even though it is only three ccs, it works about half the time and I don't have to get an emergency defill. I am still losing about a pound a week if I stay away from treats, and that is fine with me. I will probably be slower than many reaching my goal, but as long as I am still losing most of the time, I am good.

Sometimes reading the posts here make me wonder if some people just weren't mentally ready for WLS and needed more time with the bariatric team psychiatrist. Complaining about the limited drink/food choices early on... blah..blah...blah. The living to eat mentality really needs to go and be replaced with eating to live. JS

We have to remember that everyone moves at their own pace. For some it may be harder to adjust, people may have other factors at play that feed into the unhealthy relationship with food e.g. eating disorders, trauma. I'd hope those who you are referring to address this outside of this forum, with a professional.

This is a place to feel safe to vent, seek advice, hopefully without judgement.

Compassion goes a long way :)

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
