After Gastric Bypass - In ICU

Recommended Posts

Hi, I was told by a friend who has her surgery at the a Navy Base Hospital and after surgery she was in ICU for 24 hours?!? Is that normal? Or in a regular hospital will I go right to my own room after recovery? Thank y'all for your replies ????

I had a RNY. The surgery lasted about an hour. I was in the recovery room for about an hour. Then I went to a hospital room. I began walking the halls two hours later and that was the routine (walking every 2 hours) for the next 2 days (to avoid blood clots). I left the hospital for home 2 days later. Sometimes there are complications and I think that is where an ICU comes in. Because of the excess weight, many of us have pre-existing medical conditions that require special care. This was a civilian hospital not a military one.

I went to recovery for 2 hours and then to a regular room. I was out of bed within 1 hour of getting to my room walking and using the bathroom.

No ICU for me

No ICU for me. Recovery room (which I don't remember), and then was moved into a regular hospital room.

You shouldn't be in ICU, unless there is something wrong.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
