Oxycodone and Gastric sleevers

Recommended Posts

I am 3 years out and have had more than one nasty experience when taking narcotics for post surgery pain management. I get this horrific burn in my chest that feels like someone is stabbing me straight through with a flaming broom stick. I have gone to the ER more than once for a "gastric cocktail" to stop the pain. It is indescribably excruciating.

Has anyone else had a similar experience? I told my bariatric surgeon about it and he had me take a course of Carafate for a month prior to my hysterectomy to try to protect my tiny tummy from the pain meds. I had some success with this but I ate an entire Protein bar right before every dose. It seems that my stomach can handle the narcotics if I have some dense Protein first. I have an appt with a GI recommended by my gastric surgeon in a few weeks. Any thoughts from my fellow sleevers??

I've had Percocet three times after my plastics surgeries and as long as I took them with something like granola, crackers, (or yes, I ate cake once), then it seems to be ok. I don't get pain so much as nausea and I really avoid using them for more than a day or two because I get so totally blitzed on both Percocet and Tramadol.

Do you have another surgery coming up? The Tramadol/Motrin cocktail is very effective for some people and may not bother your stomach like Oxycodone (Percocet) does.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
