KC VSG 46 Posted May 29, 2015 I have an iPhone 5 through AT&T. Do I need to do anything special to ensure that I do not get charges added to my bill?
mentalistfan 189 Posted May 29, 2015 I don't see how this can be answered, how does this pertain to WLS?
deedadumble 1,033 Posted May 29, 2015 I don't see how this can be answered, how does this pertain to WLS? It's in the Mexico surgery forum so of course it's relevant. I added intl data and voice when I went because I had to be available for work. It was about $55 total. Your best solution to avoid charges is to turn on airplane mode and then only use wireless. Make sure you download a chat app or Skype. You may need to buy some Skype minutes.
Kindle 8,667 Posted May 29, 2015 Like deedadumble said, if you don't add an international plan, I'd definitely suggest turning your phone to airplane mode or you will get charged for incoming calls and text messages. I did not get an international plan, but could still email and use FaceTime and iMessages for free when connected to WiFi.

If I keep my phone on airplane mode I will still be able to connect to their wifi and use those functions? Then I will not be charged roaming fees?
"Henry" 109 Posted May 29, 2015 Hi everyone, Some of the hospitals in TJ have wifi for patients. We have wifi in our recovery condo and free calls to the U.S. and Canada as part of BP's service.
FancyCakes 46 Posted May 31, 2015 I added an international plan where text and data are still free and calls are 20 cents a minute. Plus the hotel has free wifi. My brother lives in China and we talk on a free app called WeChat that has voice and video calling for free,
sleeve32 27 Posted June 3, 2015 (edited) I went to mexico and had my surgery on May 1st. I just turned all of my data off and used the WiFi at the hospital. No problems. Through AT&T the regular text messages are 50 cent each. I just text when I needed to. It was no problem at all. Once back at the airport I turned my data back on and all was good. Hope this helps.
