8wks out hit complications

Recommended Posts

So over the weekend I started to feel awful, developed abdominal pain, kind of like being kicked in the stomach every time I moved and food was worse when I ate or drunk something.

I'm 8wks post RNY bypass and have been eating solid food for a couple of weeks now.

I went into hospital on tuesday, after trying antibiotics for a couple of days, and had a CT scan which showed thickening of my jejunum. Slight raising of my inflammatory markers but no white cells or temperature, so not an infection.

After three days in hospital the conclusion is that I had been too ambitious with my solid food and my new anatomy wasn't coping that well...

Anyway I wondered if anyone else had had a similar experience or learning?

At 8 weeks I was told that I should be completely healed and I felt like it as well. I did follow the eating plan though 100 percent leading up to it.

Even after 8 weeks I was able to eat soft foods but had to chew really really well and take it slow. I remember this because I went to Las Vegas for 10 days and had to eat out the whole time. The only two Proteins I could tolerate was chicken and fish.

I hope you feel better soon.

Doing much better and home from hospital now. CT of my abdomen showed inflammation around the my new anatomy in the jejunum, probably caused by being over ambitious eating - chewed everything well but probably overestimated my capacity. I was also majorly dehydrated so I have to do much better on drinking fluids.

Am restarting my phased return to work on monday and taking it a bit easier this time with a slower phasing to help me keep my fluids up and keep more balanced.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
