Hey there September sleevers! Any one out there?

Recommended Posts

Hello all, I too am "tentatively" scheduled for September, the 21st to be exact... but that date can change depending on my insurance. I have my psych evaluation on 7/27, and my last dietary apt on 08/03 and then it will be submitted to my insurance for hopefully QUICK approval. I have read, and read and read until I can't read anymore. I am ready to do this... but of course I have a lot of nerves. My main concerns is about blood clots. Although I am not someone who get blood clots I know that is a concern for sleevers. My gastric Dr, kind of made a big deal about the clots in return making me want to research until my fingers bleed (not really) and I just can't research anymore. I guess this is all part of the process, worry, nerves, excitement all wrapped up in 1! I am putting it in God's hands and hope and pray and have faith that everything will go as planned. I look forward to following this forum during my process. :)

So I keep going back and forth wether or not to tell my job? You just use vacation... As if nothing happened. Any thoughts? Have you told your employer?

I've told my job. I don't get any paid vacation or personal time, so it's unpaid time off, but I figured they wouldn't be so irritated about me being gone for a week if they know it's surgery and not just a vacation. That being said, health privacy laws prevent your employer from asking specifics, so if you told them you were taking some time off for medical reasons, they legally can't ask you anything else.

I have not been at my job long enough to use FMLA, so I chose to tell my manager. I am shooting for surgery on September 4th because that is the Friday before the long weekend and also because my son's birthday is September 1st and I didn't want his birthday to be overshadowed by my surgery. My manager has been great and said that he will do everything he can to work with me. I plan some personal days and vacation days combined.
I've mentions it too coworkers, but not to my manager. I'm planning to complete FMLA just as soon as I'm given a surgery date and return to work day. FMLA with contact my manager anyways... I have about 2 weeks for vacation/sick time, but I have UNUM STD... so I'll have money coming in... to cover the other four weeks I'm off....

I only plan on being out of work for 11 days, a little shorter than I like but I think I can handle it.

I've told my manager and one close friend coworker. They both are supportive. But I don't plan to tell most associates at first.

Well I can't say a word until the very end. I was off of work for almost 11 months. I broke my foot and have nerve damage. Also had surgery to repair my clavicle bone...Yes I know, I'm a hot mess!!!. My injury didn't happen at work. But I was lucky enough to keep my job. I guess things happen for a reason. I was not looking into having bariatric surgery....But the more I was home, the more I gained weight, and the more depressing it became for me.

So let's talk about rehabilitation time.... I have seen people taking a month, two weeks, 5 days... What do your surgeons recommend?

I haven't discussed it with my sugeon yet but I can do 11 days. That's it. LOL. Considering I came home from a c-section in 48 hours and walked up a flight of stairs and took care of my son alone everyday until I went back to work, I think this should be fairly easy.

my surgeon said I would be in the hospital for three days at the most. And that recovery is much faster, because they use robotic surgery.. That by two weeks I would be feeling like myself again.

My surgeon say 4-6 weeks, post op will be 2 weeks after surgery... depending on how I'm feeling, he will write me a return to work letter either good to return before my remaining 2-4 weeks are up or to continue recovery.

Blood clots- I was told that I needed to give myself a shot everyday for the first week or so to help with blood clots. They are going to teach me how to give myself a shot right before surgery and then in the hospital. (I actually blocked this out of my mind until blood clots were just brought up! uhh.... not thrilled about giving myself a shot but I guess it is much better than taking the chance with blood clots.)

Telling work- I told my supervisor. I need to work with our HR group once I have my surgery date. I am only telling my co-workers that I am having surgery. I am not going into details. Since I have already lost 40# pre op and hope to have 50 pound off before surgery- I don't think they will know. I have made sure everyone knows that I am going to a NUT and that is why I am losing weight right now. HR and your supervisor cannot disclose why you are on medical leave- that is against the law. I'm not opposed to telling folks but right now I am only sharing this with my close friends and family.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
