How much can you eat post-VSG?

Recommended Posts

How much can you eat at a single meal post-VSG at 1 year + out?

1 cup?

1.5 cups?

I know there are slider foods which one can consume more of, and lean Protein which one can eat less of. I'm just a newly sleeved person trying to better understand where I'll be in a year.

Very much appreciate any example you can give of what you eat that are known (e.g., mc donald's happy meal, single bean burrito from taco bell). Know those examples aren;t the healthiest, but you get the point :)

I don't eat bread at all, and grains only on rare occasions, so it's hard for me to talk about hamburgers or burritos! I could eat a small hamburger patty (3 to 3.5 ounces) plus maybe an ounce or two of veggies. French fries are a slider food so I wouldn't go there but I bet I could eat a lot of them.

My typical meal is 2.5-3 ounces of Protein (maybe a little more depending on the kind of protein -- I can eat more soft fish and eggs than I can chicken breast or steak) plus a couple ounces of green veggies. This usually comes out to about a cup of food, maybe a cup and a half depending on the veggie involved. This usually leaves me quite full and not wanting anything more.

My capacity at 16 months is very similar to Bafflehead's. I could eat a 3 oz burger with a slice of cheese and no bread, or 2 oz of burger and a few bites of steamed veggies. For Breakfast today, I had a scrambled egg, with 1/2 oz of cheese and 1/2 oz of ham. If I am having a casserole or beef stew, I will measure out 1/2 cup, because it is more dense than Soup. If I am having Soup, I can eat a cup, because it is more liquid. Bread, corn, potatoes, rice, are a rare treat.

I was actually starving the other day and stuck in my car, so I stopped at Taco Bell and actually ordered a bean burrito becuase I could hold it and eat it as I was driving as opposed to a cup of their pinto's and cheese. I ate a couple bites with the tortilla,.and ended up sucking the Beans out of the rest. I would say I ate 3/4 of it. I'm 9 months out. I was actually surprised I could eat as much of it as I could....

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
