Low iron/ hemoglobin levels

Recommended Posts

Hi all

I've recently had my final blood work done prior to surgery and they found I have low iron/ hemoglobin levels. I was put on Iron supplements and had my levels rechecked and they haven't risen appropriately. So my experienced sleevers will this delay or stop my surgery?? I'm so nervous I've scheduled time off, and turned in my paperwork for time off

My Iron was a little low but they went ahead with surgery. Iron deficiency is the most common Vitamin deficiency. As far as supplements, take your supplements with Vitamin C and NOT with Calcium (or milk). It works better and faster that way. Good luck.

I had low Iron pre-sleeve and it did not delay my surgery. Good luck!

I've had low Iron and elevated white blood cell count for the last 8 months. My doctor sent me to an oncologist and he just placed me on iron pills. I'm scheduled for pre-op testing on June 29th and surgery on July 28th. I pray all goes well, it would be devastating to be told I can't proceed after all these months. Best wishes to you on June 26th.

Grapefruit juice helps your body bind Iron in your blood. Try drinking it frequently between meals.

I can relate. I was supposed to have surgery initially in February and my levels came back super low. I had 5 Iron Infusions and 3 iron pills per day. I was just checked again and I am still a little low but not enough to prevent my surgery on Monday. It's tough but you will feel so much better when they are back to normal

Be careful with grapefruit juice. It interferes with some medicines, like statins (for cholesterol) so check with your gp first). ????

Right you are, Catherine. My Dear Hubby had to give it up when he started taking Metformin for his blood glucose levels.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
