Day 6 post op...stabbing pain when drinking

Recommended Posts

I'm 6 days out and doing Powerade zero, thinned Greek yogurt, Popsicles and blended and strained black bean Soup. I have stabbing pain in the center of my chest after eating/drinking. I tried tums, Ice and sitting up but nothing helps. Any ideas? Can't call my doctor either as he is out of town until 6/9 (wish I knew that before surgery). Please help.

I had that too, I think it's just part of the healing process. I was so thirsty all the time, but every sip would hurt. It will get better soon. I had surgery April 23rd and last week (may 18th) was the best I felt. I never had any issues just the pain when eating or drinking anything. Just part of the journey. Good luck!! You will feel 100% soon

Are you taking small sips and waiting a minute in between? You might still have so much swelling that backing off the full liquids for another day or two will make a difference. Try different temperatures also, some people do better with cold liquids while some can only tolerate warm at first.

I've experienced the same thing if I don't wait long enough between sips. It's been a great reminder of the fact that I need to take my time and slooow down. I'm 6 days out. It has gotten better over the past 3 days.

Sips not gulps. Sometimes small gulps will do it to us. I forget and try to guzzle down 2 or 3 gulps and forgetting about surgery and it feels like I was stabbed in the chest.

I'm 2 1/2 weeks out and am still experiencing the same thing. I found my main culprits were cold and too dense of foods. I can only handle things at room temp.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
