Missy0224 6 Posted April 22, 2011 How come you guys are eating so much carbs?? They are on 'THE FORBIDDEN" list for me- Everytime I am tempted to have some bread or Pasta I can hear my surgeon going " NO BREAD, RICE, PASTA, or POTATOES","You're NOT EATING THESE, Right?" :-) If your doc is saying not to eat it then you shouldn't eat it. All doctors have different rules.

ElfiePoo 109 Posted April 27, 2011 I'm not going to get into the whole argument that all calories are created equal or aren't. Perhaps they aren't when there is a metabolic problem and not if you're 'normal'. If you really want to know why so many bariatric surgeons are prescribing low carb, here are some sources: "Good Calories/Bad Calories" and "Why We Get Fat" by Gary Taubes. "The Diabetes Solution" by Dr. Richard Bernstein And here's an LA Times article that does a pretty good job for being an article. Scroll down to click "next" because there are 4 pages (really not that long once you scan past the ads). Many people think 160gm is low carb because that's what the American Diabetic Assoc. uses for their diabetic diet. A number of diabetes experts, however, still feel that's too high since it's not resolving the insulin resistance or getting Type 2's off their meds. They're coming around more to Dr. Bernstein's way of thinking - 30-60gm spread across 3 meals and no grains, fruits or starches. Those without metabolic problems obviously have the ability to eat more carbs. We just need to figure out which we are. Hope this helps

ElfiePoo 109 Posted April 28, 2011 Are you sick?? I mean actually sick, like a virus or a bad cold? Why did you eat nothing most of the day?? Velvet, I had read that intermittent fasting was good for resolving insulin resistance and reducing the production of ghrelin. Unfortunately, I found the update to that article (recommended by someone I respect highly) where he said it just didn't pan out and actually raised blood sugar in the short term. As a diabetic, that's a problem for me...particularly since they don't know what happens in the long term. So the 'nothing' for Breakfast and lunch was the intermittent fasting, but since control of my diabetes is what it is all about for me, fasting (even though it does help slow production of ghrelin - hunger hormone) is not appropriate for me.
