laguerr13 993 Posted May 24, 2015 After several financial setbacks and two years of researching gastric surgery I am a few days away from being scheduled, wish some had told me that a lot of insurances don't cover all the pre surgery procedures, I would say put some money aside early on to have the continuity, also make sure that before you even start that you are cool with knowing that you have to throw every single bad diet habit you were taught, and realize that there are too many things going on in life to even care about mealtime, also be willing to do some research, I have already saved a couple of hundred on my powders and Vitamins just by going on the Internet and pricing similar products, remover that you don't need those pretty packaged items that your bariatric center will offer you, and the most important thing to remember is that all the horror stories you will hear are from people who used the surgery to get skinny quick and were never willing to make the COMMITMENT ! LaLa Lady 98 Posted May 24, 2015 Don't buy too much of anything in quantity as your likes and dislikes will likely change after your surgery. Ice chips, SF popsickles, SF Jello and lots of Water will be helpful to have on hand for your first week along with some Tylenol and a heating pad... Good luck. Gladys62 64 Posted May 24, 2015 I wish you luck and I agree that your taste change. Some companies will send free samples of Protein powders to try if that helps. I do, however, disagree that "all the horror stories....." That is incorrect. Sometimes surgeries have complications. I had a horrible surgeon so I had complications. I was/am committed and have gone strictly by the rules. He made mistakes that set me WAY back. My advice is to COMPLETLY AND THOROUGHLY research the surgeon that you plan to use! I later found a website that had complaints about this surgeon's coldness and lack of compassion. I found it too late. So not ALL problems are a lack of commitment. I truly wish you good luck. laguerr13 993 Posted May 24, 2015 I apologize for miss-wording my text Miss Gladys, but if u look back on it I did say "most" that is because 85-90% of the negative comments and experience I read were by people who failed to tell their Dr, that they were not doing it for the right reasons, occasionally I would run across a story about a negative experience that was not the patient's fault, the worse being infection control issues, and a poor choice in surgeons, it is very hard to find stories that are negative when people follow every step they are given, even the one story of a 45yo man complaining of ending up in ICU because of post surgery pneumonia, the problem was he never utilized his spirometer and snuck in some smoking starting the same day right after surgery, but like many of you people that I am getting to know on here, I will arrive to commit and be sincere when I falter........... maggie409 765 Posted May 24, 2015 I agree! I am scheduled for June 15 and it amazes me the stupid stuff some people do and then blame it on the procedure. Someone was eating bacon days post-op and some were smoking and drinking alcohol. If you aren't willing to give those up then reconsider the surgery.
Bobbe Schu 53 Posted May 24, 2015 (edited) We have to be supportive and remember we are all human. We tend to slip up. Be encouraging--not critical. Edited May 24, 2015 by Mrs. Schu
laguerr13 993 Posted May 24, 2015 Mrs. Schu I agree but too many times the soft sell turns into enabling, I work in psych and I would not want someone who needs this surgery plot be turned off by all the negative aura that surrounds it, we have a right to be well informed and look at all the variables, I apologize if I came across as blunt (sincerely) but many times when people looked at me they didn't "sugarcoat" it , I remember wanting a position at a job years ago and studying very hard to get it with my supervisor only to have the job given to someone else because she would be safer on a ladder, telling people as to why others fail is not critical, we all have and will suffer setbacks, but if it is continual then I will not become my mother who I loved very dearly but gave me food to fix things......... #be real it may help one person#

However, encouragement is NOT enabling. We must be careful not to be so critical that it would cause someone to give up altogether. It's my understanding that these forums are meant to be supportive. Just sayin'!
wannaBthinsoon 1,634 Posted May 24, 2015 @@laguerr13 best of luck to you on your upcoming surgery. Best decision I ever made, with the exception of marrying my husband. (he does rank a smidge higher).
flipper72 36 Posted May 26, 2015 Can I ask why insurance you have laguerr13 ? I don't want to pry, but I have an HMO (tufts) and am hoping they cover most of the procedures. I'll have to start reading the fine print.
laguerr13 993 Posted May 27, 2015 I have UHC through my work, but I'm on a different tier where they have ore allowances, still some of it came out of pocket for me, so save up a little
