Making Protein Shakes Last

Recommended Posts

In preparation for surgery I got in the habit of making a Protein Shake very morning. I actually found several recipes that I really loved. Now three months after surgery I'm struggling, not because my tastes changed but because of quantity. The Protein Shakes I make just don't save well and even though I've cut back the ingredients, I always have some left over. Do other people have this problem? How do you handle it? I miss my Protein shakes!

I was forbidden from Protein Shakes, or and liquid calories for that matter, from 2 weeks postoperative.

Freeze a portion. I do it all the time. Sometimes I will then soften it in the microwave for a bit and eat it as a frozen "treat" or I let it defrost all the way and drink it. I have also frozen one serving in the bottom of a bottle and then out another liquid portion on top for taking to work. It keeps the first serving cold, the only way I can drink it. I put the bottle back in the fridge after drinking the first half and the second half will be there for later.

@@aelovelady that's interesting. My doc encourages them but because I get enough Protein without them I don't actually have to do them. I just sort of miss them.

@@OregonTeacher that's a good idea. Though I actually just did the math - I try to only do 4 ounces a meal and 4 ounces of Protein shake isn't actually all that much protein!

@@Indieflickers, I make my Protein Shakes so that I end up with 16 grams of Protein in a 4oz serving. I use 8oz if 1% milk, 1 scoop of unflavored Unjury Protein Powder and one packet of Swiss Miss DIET hot cocoa mix.

It makes 8 oz so I divide it in two and keep the rest in the fridge for the next meal.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
