Beer after gastric sleeve?

Recommended Posts

No judgement PLEASE! Experiences?! I was basically only a beer drinker before surgery and very socially, trying to adapt has been hard, almost three weeks out i tried really light beer and haven't had an issue! Drank much slower but I wasn't hammered off 1 beer and it didn't hurt either! Just looking for HONEST feed back!

I was a huge beer drinker (pun intended) before surgery and I really thought I'd miss it. But I tried my first one at about 5 months and discovered carbonation is the one and only thing my sleeve won't do. One or two sips and my tummy hurts. The closest I can get to beer is hard cider over ice until it's pretty flat.

I can drink non-carbonated alcohol, however.....anything from wine to vodka cocktails to straight whiskey. I was actually bummed to find out alcohol doesn't affect me any differently than before surgery. I could practically out drink a football team without feeling drunk, and I was looking forward to being able to get a quick buzz, but alas it was not meant to be.....

So I went from having 2-3 cocktails every night (yea, really) to maybe a drink 2-3 times a month. Since surgery, my brain just decided all those calories aren't worth the minor buzz I might get.

I definitely feel like drinking on special occasions now is better for calories but today it didn't effect how drink

I got vs my alcohol intake I assumed I would get drink off a drink and I had a few without an issue over a course of 4 hours and was fine!

I experienced the same thing. I however am afraid of drinking a beer because of the carbonation. I did however have 6 4oz glasses of wine 1 month postoperative and felt no different than I would have before surgery.

I do, but slowly and I have to be super careful to choose one that's lightly carbonated (like Guinness) when I do. Poured in an icy glass is better and wait a bit for the bubbles to escape. Wine makes my tummy hurt most of the time now. I've come to prefer a sugar free margarita if I can get it.

It seems very personal....a few sips of beer was really uncomfortable, I'm going to give it a miss for another year.

Strangely a small gin and tonic went down OK, took all night but OK!

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
