5 weeks post op. Diarrhea since surgery. HELP!

Recommended Posts

I'm exactly 5 weeks out with continued diarrhea. I can't take it anymore. I take immodium AD every 2-3 days, but as soon as it wears off I'm running to the bathroom. I've been on mushy food for two weeks and soft food for a week with no change. I've tried lactose free so it's not that. I go on vacation in two weeks to Europe and I'm dreading it. The doctor tested me for C Dif and it came back negative but said my white blood count was high so they are running more tests. I see no end in sight!

Just got all the results back. Everything is normal. I didn't take it as good news. The doctor said the white blood count could just mean inflammation. I was actually praying that something would come back positive so we could treat it and this would all go away.

@@Kristy Haugen Oliver I was ok for a while (I'm 4 months out) but over the last month have had a lot of nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. I wasn't sure it it was the antibiotics I'm on for my lyme or the surgery or what. My gall bladder function was tested and it is just over the wrong side of the line so we're trying to decide what to do. Did you have your gall bladder out with your bariatric surgery or was it something else that precipitated removal?

So has this been the case for you since surgery or or was there a time when you didn't have the gastro problems? Has your dr tested to see if there's a leak or an obstruction?

Where in Europe are you going? I am totally jelly.

I've been doing fiber and probiotics since I got home from surgery. The diarrhea started about 3 days after surgery and has not stopped. I had my gall bladder out years ago. I asked about a leak but I'm not in pain and I don't have a fever so they didn't think it was a leak.

Are you drinking and eating sugar free food. I was fine with it pre op but I can't touch anything sugar free since or it's off to the races for the bathroom.

Have you tried stopping the fiber? Im having an issue with diarrhea now also but I am about 3 months out and it just started after I reintroduced salad so I think that is my culprit.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
