Hi, so the short answer is yes, cheating can cause problems. The severity of the problems will vary from person to person and what you mean by "cheating." Progressing too quickly can cause damage to your pouch, stretch it, or cause food intolerances. Eating things that are high in sugar or fat can slow down weight loss and cause dumping (it's rare with this surgery but it happens) Your weight loss will generally slow down a bit the further out you are from surgery but everyone's body acts differently. Every doctor has their own diet plan. For example, at week 5 I was on my soft diet which was almost any soft food that also fell into the low fat, sugar free criteria. The only things I was told to stay away from was raw veggies, nuts, seeds, tough meats and fruit skins. Anything else was fair game assuming I could get it down.

Do you have a Nut? My surgeon's office provided a detailed post-op food plan and by the 5th week I am on a soft/mechanical diet (soft foods, plus fish and ground/moist meats).

I have called and met with my NUT for questions and clarification and she has been very helpful. I do have to slow down and put some thought into what I plan to eat but the guidelines are pretty clear.

As long as I meet my Protein and Water goals and only eat what is on my approved list I feel confident and haven't felt deprived.

A NUT is a nutritionist. Here in the US, most bariatric surgeon's have a nutritionist on staff.

Here is a link to a post-op diet/nutrition guidelines that looks similar to the one I have although it's not my surgeon: http://www.upmc.com/Services/bariatrics/approach/post-surgery/diet/Pages/default.aspx

I hope this helps.

In addition to my post above, if you don't have access to Protein supplements, you will have to focus on high-protein foods: yogurt, soft cheeses, milk, meat, seafood/fish, Beans, etc.

Agree- that's the food to focus on that the stage you are in, make yourself some eggs or chili with ground turkey & beans.

I don't know why the link did not work for you, it comes up for me when I click on it.

Try searching "Bariatric surgery manual", "bariatric post-op food plan" or something similar.

I'm down about 30 lbs in 3 weeks since surgery. I saw my doctor a few days ago and he has cleared me for exercise (played golf on Saturday) and he has also cleared me for foods because of how well I am doing. It varies from person to person. I have seen some people who were in so much pain still, and then there are those who walked out in under 24 hours (me) from the hospital. To obviously avoid any issues, investigate online what doctors recommend if yours is not very helpful. Stay within the weekly parameters and you should do fine to see what you can tolerate. A few days ago, I tried to eat some really soft grounded up meat that had a bit of BBQ Sauce on it to add flavor and i blocked myself and that was not good. So you really have to safely do trial and error. Good luck.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
