This pre op diet is killing me

Recommended Posts

Scheduled 5-21-15 so only a few more days. I have lost between 16-18 pounds since the 14th. Its gotten to where I can't stand vegetables and Water (diet soda, flavored water, etc) is unappealing. I don't want to eat or drink anything. Is this normal? I have never been this long without eating (more than I should) so I am in new territory. Thanks

I did the pre-op diet for 2 weeks and yes by a certain point I had to make myself eat and drink. I had to do Protein shakes, sf pudding, light yogurt, Gatorade and Water. Not much variety there and everything was sweet. Maybe try spicing things differently for variety? I couldn't wait to get to the surgery date for it to be over but now I am on a week of 3 Protein Shakes a day and sf popsicles...lol Just keep your eyes on the prize and enjoy the weight you are losing as a by product of the pre-op diet...they are pounds that you are ahead of the game for after surgery. Good luck and hang in there!!

My diet is Water, diet soda, broth, two cups steamed or raw vegtables, sugar free Jello. I asked and was told I can have a small amount of grilled chicken breast so yesterday I splurged and had a half a can of white chicken, teaspoon of mayo and about 4 chopped pickles. I had to have something to eat or I would not have made it much further. I see lots of people saying they did not have to start a diet until two days befor and others two weeks before. I am glad of the weight that has dropped off, if only it could have happened while I was eating my favorite pizza!!

I am 10 day's post op and I did not do the pre op liquid diet. My surgeon required it but I did not follow through, and shockingly enough she said my liver was super tiny. When in fact I started eating more then ever before during those two weeks before the surgery. I guess everyone is different and I lucked out. But I wish I did because I would have lost way more by now. I have only lost 22 pounds. So don't give up you're ahead of the game!!!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
