Hematoma after band to sleeve revision

Recommended Posts

Hi everybody. New here. I had a band to sleeve revision on May 5, and have had a lemon size "hematoma" under the incision where my port was removed since. It has started draining, at random times since May 12. I saw the PA, who went to grab the surgeon...he said "to be expected" and not a problem. Well, except that when it decides to drain, it's a pretty big amount...ruins my clothes, sheets, etc. Anybody else had this problem? What did you do about it? I see the surgeon for my 2 week post-op visit on Wed. My husband is worried, thinks we need to call.

It doesn't sound normal to me. I didn't have any problems with my incisions

I did not experience this bit that port site was weird and unpleasant for quite some time after band removal. First there was a "gap" where it used to sit and then it filled with Fluid. Luckily it is.now j us t a distant bad memory.

As unpleasant as it sounds. ..guessing it is not serious

I had lap band removal 11 days ago and went through the exact samething. I had to change dresses twice in one day, but the next day it stopped. I also had to place gauze and tape to help with drainage. Let me know how it goes

I had no swelling or redness or drainage at port site. It is my largest scar and the only one with steri strips instead of glue.

So far I still have some drainage, but much less than last week. My surgeon said my body had made a pocket around my port (it had) and my body wants to fill it, so until tissue is there, it fills with Fluid,

I'm pleased to report that I have been without any drainage for 48 hours, and my surgeon says I can consider it "done". I still have some swelling at the port site (well, former port site). It is going down fairly quickly.

I didn't have a drain either. But I had plenty of drainage. Thankfully that's done.

Hello I experienced the same thing. I had a huge hematoma after surgery and they would not let me leave until it reduced in size. It was still pretty big and hard. About a week after surgery it started bleeding when I was in the shower. I freaked out because it was a lot of blood.

I called my doctor and we talked about it. It doesn't happen to everyone but it does happen often with any type of surgery. He said it would be a nuisance more than anything. He told me it could take anywhere from 4-6 weeks to heal.

Basically it is a pocket of blood in between your skin/incision and the abdomen. Let me be clear that it is not beneath the abdomen or that would be a bigger problem.

Over time that pocket can fill back up with blood until the pressure is so great it leaks or spurts out. It's a pain in the ass as I have to keep changing bandages.

I'm three weeks post op now and still dealing with it although it's not bleeding as bad.

I had my revision on 6/30/15 and they put a pressure dressing over my former port site to prevent this. It's just a clear tagaderm dressing over sterile cotton balls that keep pressure on the site so no Fluid will form in that pocket that your port was in. I was told to leave it on until my two week checkup but if it fell off before that was ok. I showered every day and it didnt fall off until my appointment day and only because that was the first time I'd worn jeans since my surgery. I don't know if I could have handled what you guys went. Happy to hear that a lot of you have stopped having drainage.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
