So is honey a good substitute for sugar when sweetening something? I had RNY, I know too much sugar can cause dumping, is the same true for honey? I meant to ask my NUT at last appointment but forgot.

Honey has actual sugar in it, so I would avoid it. It's natural, but it isn't a sugar substitute.

Honey tends to make me sick, but your stomach may tolerate it. The only way to know is to try! Just test a tiny bit at a time and build up to what would be your usual amount. I can tolerate honey in my oatmeal, but not in my smoothies or on fruit, so it all depends on how picky your stomach is.

True honey does not have actual sugar in it. Honey comes from bees. Sugar come from sugar cane. However the effect of it may have the same effect on your body. I still use honey because I am allergic to artificial sweeteners, but I watch how much I use. Just start cutting back and adjusting your palette to less sugary foods.

Honey is fructose vs sucrose. Both have similar caloric and carbohydrate values. I suppose honey is better because it's natural (especially raw honey) but as for losing weight both seems fairly equal to me.

The only way to know is to give it a try. I have found that my tummy prefers honey, agave or regular sugar over substitutes. Just try a very small amount until you know.

Turns out, I have no problem with sweets. Kind of wish I did.

Thanks!! I was wanting to try the Fage Greek yogurt with honey, and just wasn't sure. I'll try a small bit and see how it goes.

As others have said, honey will get you. Overall you're better off to work on weening off the sweet, but in a pinch some powdered stevia leaf is a good bet. Not the overly processed white stevia powder from the store, but the leaf from a stevia plant - you can buy them at most hardware and gardening stores.

OR - a sorbet I make for my partner that's not terrible is 1/2 frozen banana, 1/2 cup frozen blueberries and 1 scoop powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury unflavored Protein powder, put into a food processor and let process for 2-5 minutes until sorbet-like. YUM! And VERY sweet.

1 Tbsp of honey contains 17 carbs, 16 of which are sugars. The sugars are simpler versions (fructose & glucose) than typical granulated sugar (sucrose). Sucrose is made of a fructose and a glucose linked together, so once the body unlinks them via enzymes, they are treated the same way.

Word of warning: if you use real stevia a little goes a long way. Use too much and it can take on a bitte, metallic taste. The stevia plant is also in the ragweed family. If you are allergic to ragweeds it can cause allergic reactions.

I use raw honey when I need a sweetener. If there is a choice between real good and chemicals, I will always choose real food. With the aid of my sleeve I've simply learned to use less.

@@BLERDgirl is dead on, the stevia is indeed incredibly strong. I keep a small jar of dried powdered leaves in my tea cupboard and use 1/16th tsp for a cup of tea when I want it sweet. And, yeah, ragweed. Forgot about that one.

        Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive).
