I am in the first stages of being approved for bypass surgery. How do you handle the people that are totally against you doing this. I feel this is the best thing for me and my doctor does too but the negative Nancy's are making me question myself

Do not let other people's actions and words control what you and your doctor feel is best for you. It is a journey but you can do it. You will always have haters!!! Good luck!!!

I have only told a few select people because of that. I'm scheduled for surgery May 28 and I know when I return to work the end of Aug (I teach) people will notice, but I have decided I will respond with, " I have spent the summer working on making a healthier me." And leave it there. My mother was VERY unsupportive when I told her what I was going to do, so much so I got tired of hearing her negativity the next time she said something about it, which was in March I told her to just stop because there was no guarantee it would happen because I have to go through testing first. I will not tell her about my surgery, she will see me in July, but by then I Will have had the surgery and hopefully be adapted to my new way of eating.

I had a similar experience with telling my Mom. She was shaking her head before I was able to get the word bi-pass out of my mouth. Completely against it and couldn't understand why I'd "want" to do that. As if it was a trip to Disney or something. She kept saying research it research it, and really think about this.

It was so frustrating but I was persistent and when I finally came to the decision, although she was not on board, I guess she knew I was hell bent on having this done. She was the only one who wasn't on board though. Every doctor and nurse I spoke to all agreed it was best. I have only told 1 other person and he's been very supportive.

What I learned to do before she came to terms with my ultimate decision is that by constantly telling her I was researching and what I had read, and dragging her to my information session. She began to see how it works and all that. I guess knowledge of it ll made it less scary for her.

Thanks everyone...I have done a lot of research and talked to people that have had it done. What I have found is people that have never dealt with obesity do not understand what I am going through
