Hi Everyone,

I had my upper endoscopy done today and I was told that I have a Hiatal Hernia. Gastronologist said that having the gastric sleeve is not usually advisable with this condition.

Has this happen to anyone?

I am so dissappointed - after all the tests an appointment - and now this!

is there hope?

I have read on this forum of many people that had their Hiatal hernia repaired at the same time as their sleeve surgery. I don't think the Hiatal hernia precludes the VSG surgery.

I had a hiatal hernia repaired at the same time as the sleeve surgery. No problems at all with recovery. I didn't even know I had a hernia as I had no symptoms.

Don't dare get discouraged. I'm in the pre op room waiting to be sleeved this morning. I had my Egd last week and a hiatial hernia was found. My surgeon said it would be a breeze to repair this morning while I'm in surgery. So I'm getting that done at the same time. Smile again because there is a definite that it can be done. Be encouraged. God bless you on your journey.

I had the same hernia discovered during surgery and repaired the same time I had my sleeve April 2014. I experienced no additional complications because of it and have never had heart burn, reflux or anything. I never had to take any of the prescription medications for heartburn post-surgery.

Do you have a history of gerd or acid reflux? I never even knew I had a hernia as I didn't have any symptoms (even though I was told it was really bad!). It's true that those with gerd/heart burn pre-surgery are advised to go with gastric bypass as the sleeve can make it worse. This is something you should discuss with your surgeon, not the techie doing your test :)

Thank you for your encouragement!

This whole process has been making me anxious. Please keep us posted after your surgery and your recovery

All the best.

I just recently starting feeling the heartburn and I probably have not been paying much attention to it really. I would be truly sad to even consider the Bypass surgery - I think it is too evasive and I did not want to deal with the malabsorption issues. Oh and by the way it was the Gastronologist that conducted the Endoscopy and my thought is that he is a specialist and would know this area pretty well, but I will speak with my Surgeon early next week to express my concerns

My haital hernia is what paid for my bariactric surgery. My insurance company paid for the repair and I just had to pay $900 extra for the sleeve. Both were done at the same time

This is exactly how my bariatric surgeon was able to bypass my stupid insurance & all the hoops they make you jump through. lol.

Same here. They found mine during surgery and fixed it at the same time

I had my hiatal hernia repaired when I had my sleeve done. I was on Nexium prior to surgery. At my three month visit the surgeon took me off of the Nexium. I am now 4 months out and no reflux since I came off the Nexium.

I would not worry about what the gastroenterologist has to say about the sleeve. Talk to your bariatric surgeon. That is his specialty not the gastroenterolgist's specialty.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
