Random Post-Op Questions

Recommended Posts

My surgery was on Monday, so I'm about 3 days post op. I had the gastric sleeve & a hiatal hernia repair. This was also my 1st surgery ever... So a lot to take in...

1. Water, I'm drinking it, but it hurts. Especially anything cold.

2. Protein, I can't drink the entire 8 ounces at once. Is it OK, to sip on the same glass throughout the day?

3. Gas pain, I'm still having gas pain, and it's really painful to burp.

4. Bowel movement, my NP said if no BM by post-op day 3 (today), to start Miralax. So I've started that today...has anyone else had to take miralax? Any issues?

Thank you in advance for your time & answers. Feeling very overwhelmed!

-JM

I had surgery April 27th. First surgery also. Water was very hard to get down. My second and third day were the worst. I woke up 5 days post op and felt so much better. The gass pains were also better. Now, I did not have a BM until 1 week post op. I then went another week and no BM. I took a full dose mirlax and had horrible loose stools. I definitely wouldn't take a full dose to start. It will get easier! Now I don't even feel like I had surgery.

I had my surgery on the 27th as well. The second and third day was the absolute worst. There is no way your going to get 8oz down at a time. They say to try and drink every 15 minutes. I used gas x strips for the first 2 weeks for the gas and didn't have a bm for about 5 days. I still don't have one everyday and Constipation is a constant issue. Good luck to you.

Thank you so much for your replies. For some reason today, being day 3, has been a rough one. I wasn't sure why, but it's a relief to know its not just me. I'm going to go ahead and cut the miralax dose in half too. Thank you again. It's nice to know the light at the end of the tunnel isn't a train. Lol

Lol....It definitely gets easier. I was back in my bed sleeping on my side and belly about a week out. Today I have absolutely no pain. I can drink large amounts with no pain and I can eat about 4oz with no issue. I'm on my puree week and I live off of my Protein Shakes, grits, sf pudding, and the individual tuna packs. The tuna is a little heavier than the grits so I can only eat a 2 oz pack. I had a half of biscuit with gravy yesterdAy and I thought I was gonna die lol....didn't agree with the choice I made but damn it tasted good lol....

I actually was up 2 lbs for about 5 days posted op. Then I dropped it after a week plus a few pounds. I am 3 weeks post op Monday and I have not lost anything all week. It's frustrating but my doctor warned me this might happen then it will start coming off.

I started at 3O1 and now I am 269 but went into surgery at 275, lost a lot in my 3 weeks pre op diet. I have learned this is definitely a tool and not a miracle cure. I have been doing cardio every day and seeing the scale not move is hard.

My Dr told me he's not concerned with any weight loss until I'm 6 weeks post op. It's just hard to listen when your stuck at the scale. What foods do you eat right now?

Regarding the weight gain while in the hospital, I'm sure it has a lot to do with being dehydrated pre-op, and then getting round the clock fluids while being admitted in the hospital. Plus tack on swelling from the surgery itself. It all kind of evens itself out, so by the time you're DC'd it's perfectly OK, to have not lost & maybe even gained. I hope that helps a little...?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
