Had a sleeve 1 year ago! Still Haven't lost!

Recommended Posts

Hey guys... Im from New York. And I have my vsg with Dr. Ren of Nyu Dec 13, 2013..since that time I have really only lost about 50lbs. And slowly but surely you can see the weight creeping back on. I am always hungry... And even sometime when I'm not hungry I still want to eat. At this point I have been to the surgeon and she told me I am the only person whom she has ever operated on that hasn't lost much. Which hurt my feelings... ALOT! So since then I haven't gone. I know most of you will say u need to still go to your appointments but I can't face more embarrassment. My brother had a sleeve June 28,2014 and is more than 100 lbs out. I don't know what to do.. Where to turn... And I feel as if I'm loosing to food once more!! I would love to hear any advice that you guys may have for me. Thank you! Have a great day!!

Hi! I'm sorry to hear that you are having such a struggle. Are you getting in enough Protein every day and tracking what you eat on MyFitnessPal.com? If you are seeing the weight coming back try going back to basics or even trying the 5 day pouch test. http://5daypouchtest.com/ I did it and I feel like it helped me get my head back on straight when I was starting to worry.

Are you eating your meals Protein first and when you are snacking are you making good choices (fruits, beef Jerky, veggies etc)? Definitely go to your appts and ask your surgeon for advice, or go and speak with your nutritionist and lay out what your eating habits are like and see if they can make some recommendations on how to help you. Though kudos on losing 50 pounds!!! That is really excellent progress!

Do you have restriction?

Are you following a high Protein, lower carb diet?

Are you weighing and measuring your food?

Are you mostly staying away from sweets?

Are you exercising?

If you answered "No" to one or more of these questions, then there is your answer.

I've seen lots of people get back on track and turn things around, and you can too! Just get back to basics...protein first, no sugar, no complex carbs, lots of Water and move. When you keep yourself full on Protein and Water, it leaves little room for junk ;)

It's all about how bad you want it.

I am sorry about your struggles. Maybe you can make an appt. with a psychologist to talk about food addiction. I say this cause you said you are always hungry? Are you drinking your fluids between meals? Have you tried My fitness pal app. to track your food? I use this and it' s been an eyeopener to see how many calories are in such foods. Did you know there is 70-80 calories in 1 slice of american cheese? Many foods can add up calories!!!

I hope you find your way and get back on the wagon :)

Im having surgery on the 19th I've decided to see a therapist because there is a reason I need to have surgery and I want to go into this as mentally prepared as possible. He is helping me figure out why I have an eating disorder and how I can avoid repeating the problem.

Everyone is different so you might not lose as fast as your brother.

Eat your Proteins first, veggies second, fruits third. Hopefully you won't have any room left for high carb foods.

Increase your physical activity. Not only will this help burn calories but it will increase your muscle mass and make you feel good. Some days I just don't want to go for a walk. I finally convince myself to just do a 10 minute walk then before I know it I've walked for 20 or 30 minutes.

You can get back on track!

I would reiterate what everyone else said. Make sure you get your Protein and Water goals everyday. Exercise. And, don't be afraid to visit your surgeon, your NUT, a support group, and a therapist. If you are unhappy with your progress there is nothing wrong in using all the help that is available to you.

I concur with many suggestions above; consider and answer yourself honestly:

--Have you been faithful to the regimen of Protein, Protein, protein?

--Are you drinking lots of Water?

--Are you "sneaking" carbs, chips, sodas, candy, etc.? Do you binge?

--Exercising?

I also suggest that you get a copy of the op note from your surgery. What size bougie did the surgeon use?

They can check your insulin and glucose levels, as well. From all of what I can see, and given your height/original weight, you are insulin resistant, I'm pretty sure.

Do you drink a lot of 'sugar free' drinks? See if they have Splenda/sucralose. I personally do NOT lose weight with things containing Splenda/sucralose. Maybe it's the same for you. "It tastes like sugar because it's made from sugar," was their phrase. In my body (and others), it acts like sugar, so I have to avoid it. I will not lose anything if I use that stuff; I stall. I use Sweet & Low.

IF you've truly done your part, then ask your doctor if she'll do x-rays (upper GI, etc) to check your stomach size now. Maybe the sleeve is too large. But even if it is, if you're doing everything you should--esp PROTEIN, Water and EXERCISE--it does seem you would have lost more weight than you have. But hang in there, as you get further evaluated. Don't give up.

Once in a while someone has a bad surgery... leaving the stomach too big. Have you had an image taken of your current sleeve to see whats up there? Once that is proven to be ok (or not) you can double down on an eating plan. Please do go back to your Dr, or see if you can go to another if possilbe if you have lost confidence in her. And yes, use Myfitnesspal, Protein first, and drink all your water! I took 3 years to get to goal, so its not all fast and easy for many. I was at around 50 pounds at a year. I had to just keep going on, and tried some different things... I tryed the 5:2 which got me to goal after gaining 20 pounds.... at this time I am up around 13 pounds from goal again.... trying the 5 day pouch test, and have lost 5 pounds of Water weight in two days so far. Just keep on trying girl! Don't give up.... I know when i try and just be "normal" and eat how I used to, without keeping track of what I eat.... I GAIN.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
