Dumping syndrome ?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, so I am almost 5 months out and lost a total of 60 pounds (14pounds was from my preop diet) so what exactly is this dumping syndrome people experience with RNY? I think I had it a couple times where I felt very nauseous after I ate something my body didn't like but that was more In the beginning. I don't feel that anymore and I am careful of what I eat. And as far as sweets goes when I went to support groups I was told no sugar or you will dump. Now after surgery my taste buds have completely changed and I hate sweets now which is a major blessing but I do however have a small piece of 72% dark chocolate occasionally. I guess my question is, does thi dumping syndrome happen from then beginning or does it sneak up on you later on down the road?

Honestly I don't think I ever had it either. I may have been close once or twice because I would get nauseous, hot and I would begin dry heaving.

As you said that was in the first couple months. Now I am 7 months post op and I have definitely tested it. I have had sugar, and enough to make me sick but I simply have not gotten sick.

I have been told that it could come on later but I don't know if that is true.

I'm 3 mons postop and the only time I had dumping syndrome was the day I tested my limits and ordered a tiny blizzard from DQ, made me so sick I had to call my husband to take me home. I can have tic tacs and often do. Have had no trouble with fatty foods at all. But I keep portions small.

I've had dumping syndrome even before having my surgery. I am a type II diabetic and would experience it if my sugars would drop too fast after being high for so long. Since my surgery I've had it happen a couple of times. Once because of one of my Protein shakes (which contained sugar alcohol) and a couple of days ago when I overdid it with fruit.

Sometimes it happens right away, I'll get the sweats and tough it out. Other times, it can be more gradual and I'll end up in the bathroom for an hour or more.

I'm almost 8 weeks out and still figuring out what food are ok. I've lost a little over 25 pounds. Fatty foods my body doesn't seem to like at all. So I stay away. I still crave sweets, but I am doing my best to keep away and not wanting to dump helps with that. I want to try a small bowl of ice cream, but I am nervous. In any event, I wish you the best of luck.

I have not had surgery yet but have experienced dumping syndrome. It is horrible. I sweat profusely, had diarrhea, my heart rate slows to where I feel like I might pass out. I get weak too. It lasts anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour. Trust me you will know if you have it or not it's that bad

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
