Anyone else have an Endoscopy?

Recommended Posts

Had my first appointment with the Dr. at UCLA today. No surgery date but since I have bad GERD/Reflux he requested a Endoscopy before proceeding. I am a little nervous. Did anyone else have this done? Besides that I met with the dietitian and all I need to do I go to a new patient class and have some blood work and meet with the Psych and I'm ready.

Any info would be great I know they will sedate me but I am a little nervous.

Hi there -

I was given medication through an IV during the process and about 5 minutes after they quit administering the medication, I woke up, which was nice. I do not remember one thing from the process itself, but my throat was sore for about a week.

Good Luck!

I had one a week ago. I was really nervous also but it was nothing! They started an IV took me back, put some medicine in my IV about 10 minutes later I was back in my room wide awake! I went shopping afterwards! You never know anything even happened

I totally agree with what has already been said. I was a bit apprehensive about having this done to me, but it ended being a "pleasant" experience. I wouldn't hesitate to have it done again if needed.

I had an endoscopy, they even took some biopsies. I don't remember a thing. I didn't even have a sore throat. I was able to sing the next day at open mic. No problems at all, and all came out fine with the biopsies. I'm lucky. I was a 30 year smoker, so I was sweating bullets, waiting for those test results to come back. Whew! Also no hiatal hernia, no H. Pylori. Good to go.

It actually took longer for the set up, (iv, checking in, etc.) than it did for the procedure.

Having one Tuesday with colonoscopy. My PC wanted me to do this two years ago but I frowned. The reason she did this because I'm over 50. I've had them both done before so it's really no big deal.

Nothing to the Endoscopy! Just a little sore throat afterwards do don't worry about it.

I was nervous too. Worst part was the IV-the nurse had trouble getting it in and I was bruised for a week afterward. They give you an IV, wheel you to the room for the procedure, tell you what they will do, spray your throat with some numbing med, put a teeth guard in your mouth so you won't bite down, then give you propofol in your IV and you are out in a few seconds waking up in recovery. No throat pain, but I was extremely tired and had a low grade fever for a day. It was a pretty easy process!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
