SAD HATTER 122 Posted May 20, 2015 I went in wanting the sleeve. My surgeon asked me what my expectations were, and what my main concerns were. Each of my smaller concerns she would stop me and say... either will do that. Then I asked the big one... When I am old, which one would be better. When I am 70-80, or in a nursing home, or if I am in a horrible accident, if I needed a full time feeding tube to help keep me alive, which one would work, and which one would be a huge problem, and she said.. Get the bypass if you are concerned with 50 years from today. Feeding tubes are easy to insert in the stomach that is left inside. With a sleeve, theres nothing to put it in other than the sleeve or intestine, and quality of life would dimish. Diabetes runs in the family. I don't have it now, but I don't want it later. RNY can do that for me. She also said that in HER practice, 20% of the RNY she performs, are a revision from sleeve. She said that in her patients with sleeve, many show that after 3 years, they no longer feel ANY restriction at all... and that they are regaining weight. Long-term, she has seen much better maintenance with the bypass. Ultimately, I am very happy with my final decision of RNY. I will get it in August.
mal0712 101 Posted May 23, 2015 I have my surgery scheduled for RNY on 5/26/15 and although I started this journey wanting to do the sleeve I did change my mind after talking to some nurses at the doct. office..... the thing that got to me was when she said alot of people that do the sleeve come back in and regret it and wish they would of just done the RNY to begin with. Ive read others that feel this same way... but now I wondering am I making the best decision for myself... I just want to do this right ... anyone change there surgery during the pre-op? For me the decision wasn't hard. The history was all there for me to look at and success from it was positive. I also have had several family members who had gbp and all did amazing with it. I never questioned wanting to have bypass or sleeved.
sparkles1971 47 Posted May 25, 2015 (edited) I chose sleeve because my bmi was 37 and I was prediabetic. It Is the procedure the doc recommended for me. I didn't want a band that needed "maintenance", and didn't feel mentally prepared for a full bypass. Everyone has to feel comfortable with their decision, as each has pros and cons. It's best to speak to a doc about what is best for your specific needs. Edited May 25, 2015 by Jadyn
