Pre Op & Post Op fatigue/headaches...any options?

Recommended Posts

So..I start my preop diet tomorrow, and it's only 1 week they required for me but I know from trying tons of low calorie diets & limiting carbs in the past that I get really tired, crabby and just become a mess physically and mentally

And of course the first few weeks after surgery will be the same..I feel like I will have a hard time getting thru it :-/ I don't want to be a tired, crabby, emotional wreck to my husband and kids!

I drink alot of coffee..can I have 3 strong cups of coffee throughout the day to help with the fatigue? Motrin or Aleve for headaches?

Obviously the goal is taking the weight off and exercise for natural energy eventually but for now I need my caffeine...because otherwise I don't know how I will have the energy to care for my 8 month old all day.

It says to limit caffeine for post op..but can I try to compensate the hydration issue from it with Water?

Any ideas or advice are appreciated!

My surgery date is the 21st..I am getting nervous :-/

No coffee. It defeats the purpose. What you are experiencing is withdrawal. We've all been through it, and we all came out better for it. You will too. Just stick with your surgeon's plan, and you will be OK. :)

And you just have to make a conscious effort to not let your withdrawal, effect you or your family. If you know that you get grumpy just tell them you need a minute to just chill or whatever. It worked for me and my family ????

coffee is usually one of things we are told to avoid at first. I don't think it is as big a deal for banded people as for other surgeries as our stomachs are not altered. I have personally, with my doctors blessing, always had coffee.< /p>

I didn't have to do a pre-op diet so can't comment on that. But post-op I limited it severely at first but then went back to normal.

I suggest asking your own doctor.

Carb withdrawal is always nasty! But live with it - it passes!

I can't tolerate artificial sweeteners -- they make me very crabby due to headache.

Same here. I stayed with it for my pre-op, but I don't use artificially sweetened anything post op. I simply cut down on the amount of sugar I take in.

I'm currently doing the pre op diet and I'm in Australia. My dietician says caffeine is fine as long as it's in moderation. My pre op diet is for 4 weeks :( the first week was the worst... I had headaches, tummy cramps, fatigue and I was just a grumpy mess. I've been having diet coke every now and then, just because I get sooooo over Water. All the best for your op!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
