Am I the only one with a one-day pre-op diet?

Recommended Posts

Don't get me wrong- I'm SUPER glad I only have a one-day pre-op diet but just curious why there is such a variance. Are there others that only have to do liquids for one day before surgery??

In hindsight, I'm glad for my 2 week pre-op. It prepared me for the new way of eating for a bit. It prepared me for the post-op life ????

I've noticed a lot of variance in what people have to do to get WLS. I've been in my program since September 2014, and my surgery is May 20. Some people have hardly any program time, and are scheduled for surgery in a couple months. I don't understand why it's so different. I wonder if there is any difference in end results. Or in ability to keep the weight off long term.

I guess it made me a bit angry at first at how long I had to wait, and how much I had to do. But now I am grateful for the length of the program and process I have gone through. It gave me time to really consider what I was doing. But then again, my last dietary appointment my nutritionist told me she had a man in her office, a week after surgery, trying to eat shrimp. So maybe it makes no difference.

I've had more time to really work on issues I have with food, with a therapist. (my own idea). It has also given me time to give up things I needed to, like smoking, caffeine, soda etc.

It's been a long journey already, but I think it prepared me well.

I have a 10 day liquid diet that I start on Monday. I believe that's going to help to ready me even more. The real reason for the long liquid diet is to shrink the liver, so the surgeon has more room to work. Perhaps not everyone needs that.

I only had one day...and I was glad as well. With my surgeon it was based on BMI. I did do a self imposed two week pre surgery detox from sugar and caffeine.

@@TN_Gal -- I'm about 14 weeks post-bypass and only had to do one day of light eating, then one day of liquids -- everything went great, and I was SO thankful I didn't have to do the two-week liquids-only diet!

I wonder if the difference is in how the surgery is paid for? I know different insurance companies have different requirements to get approved. I have spoken to some people who were required to lose 10% of their body weight before they would be covered; some were required to adhere to the clear liquid diet before they would be covered; some were required to under psychological evaluation; etc.

I am a self-pay and was told as soon as my lab work comes back, I would be cleared for surgery. I was given a two-week preop diet to follow that is a combination of liquids, shakes and some regular food. The reason I was told this was necessary was to ensure that my liver was not enlarged. I have a bmi over 50 with no health issues.

Mine was paid for by insurance. My doctor has different guidelines for different patients. I had a BMI of 40 and high blood pressure so not a smaller person, but I know some people he does a longer diet for.

I have a one day pre-op diet when I have my surgery in June. My beginning BMI was in the low 60's, during the testing phase, I lost (still losing) 37 pounds, and my BMI went down to the high 50's. I wonder if losing weight /lowering my BMI may have played a roll in the one day diet. I learned a lot during the "testing" time period though. I don't know if this helps anybody.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
