Can't wait for sushi

Recommended Posts

I am patiently sticking to my pureed foods...but I miss my sushi! And to think just one or two pieces will fill me up!

My NUT suggested sushi wrapped in mango without rice but I have not seen this available anywhere? I also have heard of sushi with cucumber and not rice. Anyone ever have those? Is there a special name for them?

I like the sushi wrapped in cucumber better than the kind wrapped in rice. Each place has a roll that is named something special but only has the cucumber wrap. At my place it's called a cold roll and it has cream cheese, crab, avocado, and something else if I remember correctly. The kind that comes with mango that I have seen is just mango on top of the rice/ sushi roll. It's ok tasting, but I don't love it.

If you just ask while you are at the sushi place, they can usually guide you to what you are looking for.

Rice is still not something I can have more than a bite of at a sitting. The carbs are not really good for you anyway and it can stretch out your new tummy.

I eat sashimi and all the yummy creative things they do with no rice. Raw fish goes down so easy it is great.

@windfairie- yeah, my NUT told me about having it wrapped without rice. She actually has banned me from rice and Pasta for 6 months. She says they can still expand while in the stomach and she doesn't want anything stretching the pouch. Fine with me, I'm content with spaghetti squash and zucchini noodles.

I like sashimi except I prefer the thinner slices used in sushi opposed to the blocks of fish with sashimi. I wonder if they would cut it thinner if I asked?

Sashimi is usually cut thin. The block of fish is the piece the counterman cuts the slices from. I'm sure though, if you ask for thin sliced sashimi, they will do it for you. I was also going to recommend sashimi. The fish alone, without the rice or sauce or other toppings is very low in fat and calories and is a healthy option as long as you stay away from the soy sauce...or cut the soy sauce with Water.

This is what I do and I find that I don't have much Water weight gain from the sodium content. Enjoy!

Lol- I know that the big block of fish is what they cut from...I was really talking about the shape i've had sashimi cut in...I like the cut I get for sushi better- although I have only had sashimi once so perhaps other places cut it different ways.

In any event...I am looking forward to it :)

I also avoid nori. The dry seaweed is really hard to eat. It gets stuck and hurts. I have never liked the rolls with mayo type sauces or cream cheese. The place near me does these lovely little things by gently smoking the fish pieces with edible flowers and fruit or pickled vegetables. no wrappers at all.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
