I was very, VERY concerned about hair loss...who wouldn't be, right? I started taking 5000 iu Biotin months before surgery. The plus is that my hair was GREAT pre surgery, as was my skin and nails! I'm 6 months out now, and my hair is still great. But Protein intake is key I believe. I take protein supplements as well.

Please don't let something like this discourage you. I am currently going through the Hair loss phase. It's not real fun to have but I'm handling it. I have (well...had) thick hair. I don't have bald spots or anything, you can just tell when you grab it in a ponytail. Dr. says to up the Protein and I do believe my body is still adjusting. I see it like this...hair will grow back..being overweight can kill you......

I HAVE NOT YET BEEN BANDED EITHER, BUT THE hair LOSS THING FREAKS ME OUT AS WELL. RIGHT NOW MY hair IS MY BEST ASSET AND I DON'T WANT TO LOSE IT. THE NUTRITIONIST SAID THAT I SHOULD NOT HAVE A PROBLEM WITH Hair loss AS LONG AS I GET THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF Protein. I HAVE ALREADY PURCHASED SOME Protein powder AND HOPEFULLY THAT IS ENOUGH TO AVOID ANY HAIR LOSS. I HOPE THERE ARE OTHERS THAT WILL POST ABOUT THEIR EXPERIENCES.

Sorry but your nutritionist is wrong. 70% of people having surgery of any type experience hair loss. Not a thing in the world to do with nutrition in this case. A lack of Protein can do it but we also have about a 2 month store of protein already before we ever go into surgery.

I was always told that hair loss was for bypass folks only, that's just not true.

There are a gazillion threads on the topic, might want to do a search and see for yourself.

WasaBB is completely right. I have been losing weight for almost six months now and I am coming into a hair loss phase. I notice that more is on the brush than before, I feel the difference in my ponytail and it looks listless.

I have been getting 80-120 grams of Protein a day (fitday says my average was 90 grams of Protein a day for the past six months), I take two chewable MVI's a day, Calcium supps, get about 4000mcg of Biotin a day and STILL am losing hair. It just happens, it just does. Not much to do about it, I don't think... I am still trying to stay about 80 grams a day postop and am hoping that it will grow back like everyone says it will. My hair is past my waist and I'm devastated at how it is starting to look...<!-- google_ad_section_end --><!-- / message --><!-- sig -->

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
