meals don't have to be boring

Recommended Posts

I was trying to figure out what to eat for lunch and nothing was appealing...not my go to foods like hummus or salad or tuna, etc.

Then I thought I would like a little bit of hummus, a piece of cheese..so, I made a platter of nibbles for lunch.< /p>

I had a hard boiled egg, a tablespoon of hummus with cut up sweet pepper for dipping. I also had a bunch of red grapes and a baby bell cheese with some crackers. I'm not sure what the calories or Protein totals were but I know it wasn't empty carbs or something else not good for us from a nutritional standpoint. And...most important, it was delicious.

I'm with you... not much appeals, so I dug up last night's caprese salad, and decided it would be good loaded up on.....a slab of green pepper! YUM. Did I say YUM? Yeah! I layered the sliced Tomato, mozzarella cheese slice (all coated in the olive oil/balsamic dressing), basil leaf, and then sprinkled with flake sea salt and chunky ground black pepper.....oh my goodness, I could be had for that! And I guess I was!!!! Try it...it is amazing, so fresh....hmmmmm....

One of my favorites for lunch at work.....black Beans simmered with some cooked Jimmy Dean sausage, petite diced tomatoes, onions, green pepper, cumin, bay leaf - any other seasonings you like. A half cup is very filling and a perfectly sized lunch for me. Very flavorful, too! I keep several 1/2 cup servings in the freezer at work so that I'm not caught without something for lunch; too many temptations in the hospital cafeteria (where I work the food there is pretty darn good!).

I've noticed that since my surgery, I want highly seasoned food more than not. It doesn't have to be spicy, although I love my spicy favorites, but I do want lots of flavor.

@@MrsSugarbabe, when my now 28 year old daughter was small, she spent a LOT of time in the hospital. Pre surgery, when we would meet for lunch, her place of choice was the hospital cafeteria! Keep in mind that neither of us work at the hospital, we just went to lunch there! Now that she has moved to Austin, I don't figure it will be too long before she finds the closest hospital to try out the food!

Aww...thank you. The 150 lb. goal was my doctor's idea. She said she would be thrilled if I got down to that weight. I kept eating the way I had been since being banded and the weight just continued to come off. It's stabilized at around 115. I haven't been this size since I was a young girl. Even when I got married, I was 125 lbs. and looked really nice so this is really an amazing accomplishment for me. Now...to keep it off. That's the real goal.

@@MrsSugarbabe, I have noticed the same thing about seasoning. My food has to be seasoned well. Also I have been craving spicy food which is really weird because I stayed away from spicy before surgery, now I look forward to it and with even splash hot sauce on some things.

What the heck is that about?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
