Birth control during surgery?

Recommended Posts

So I have the nexplanon birth control. I've had it for almost 7 months. My surgeon is fully aware of this as well as my pcp. I asked him if it was anything I need to be concerned about or have removed before surgery. He said no, it's actually one of the best methods for his bariatric patients. I am a little weary of his decision as I know that with any birth control there is a slightly higher risk of blood clots. He said estrogen is the key factor in blood clots/surgery & nexplanon is estrogen free & not to worry.

I'm thinking of just taking it out prior to surgery for peace of mind & putting in back In a few weeks after surgery? but does anyone have any input/advice/thoughts? I've already consulted my drs so I'm simply seeking opinions :) and btw I love this bc no side effects and no periods!

What would you do?!

@@SimplySharon it's not a problem if your surgeon is fine with it don't worry if it's not estrogen or anything it won't cause blood clots surgeons that do these procedures are usually nuts about this stuff and will insist u stop pills etc if he isn't freaking over it and demanding a change I wouldn't worry and cause yourself more expense or inconvience for no reason best of luck to you

You're rejecting your surgeon's advice, and you're asking non-medicos on a public message board?

My advice is take your surgeon's advice.

Not rejecting my surgeons advice. As I stated previously I was just wondering what other people would do? I'll make my own decision in the end but it wouldn't hurt to see what people thought...according to my surgeon it won't hurt to leave it, according to me it won't hurt to leave it OR take it out, but thank you for your OPINION. :)

If all of your docs are saying keep it in, I would..like he said with no estrogen no problem....plus for whatever reason we tend to get really fertile after our surgeries....not to mention the pain in the ass of going through getting it out then back in, I have the Mirena IUD and there is no issue./ Good luck!!

Leave it in. According to my dr as we lose weight our reproductive system kicks into high gear and it becomes much easier to have an accidental pregnancy. You want to make sure you have your birth control method in place before surgery and maintain it for 12 to 18 months until your weight stabilizes.

My guess is that taking it out would cause more trouble than good. You will already have some hormonal issues related to the weight loss. You don't need to make it worse by suddenly stopping your birth control.

I'm 3 months post-op and was on the pill at surgery. One thing I can add is that even being on the pill, my period got all screwed up for a good month following surgery. Many other women experienced similar things (there are several threads about this). I don't know about your specific type of birth control, but for me, even though I stayed on my pill, I had issues. That being said, I did not have blood clots, just an extremely heavy and long-lasting period.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
