Did having surgery cure your sugar craving?

Recommended Posts

I am a former sugar addict! I ate frosting for Breakfast almost daily and literally at candy and sugar food all day everyday for years and years. Now that I've had sleeve surgery I cannot stand the thought or sight of sugary foods. I struggle with sugar free pudding when I have it once in a while because I don't like the sweetness. Has this happened to anyone else? I feel that it is a blessing because I was never a big eater but was obese do to way to many sweets.

There are a few things that are so rich that they make me sick (cake and ice cream), otherwise, still love sweets. But surgery makes it easier to resist.

I believe being forced to go "cold turkey" after WLS eliminated my sugar cravings. I used to "have to have" certain sweet flavors and couldn't stop thinking about them till I had some. Now, I don't "have to have" any particular flavor. I'm still a sugar addict - when I walk past a box of donuts, the smell just sets my brain to tingling :-P. But the difference is, I can choose to eat one or pass it by. I'm not compelled to eat one.

I still love cake, donuts, ice cream.... but I don't "have to have" them and I can chose to eat some or pass it by. And my portions are so much smaller, usually my limit is 1 donut or enough cake to fill a "normal" coffee cup about half full.

So I'll always be a sugar addict, but I don't have the cravings and I do have the tools to stay in control. :-)

I don't crave sugar or sweet things like I used to. I still have a sweet treat sometimes, just not as much of it. Yesterday I had some bites of an Oreo Blizzard from DQ. I wanted more, but knew if I ate more than a few bites, I wouldn't feel well after.

For me, it wasn't just sweets, it was carbs in general - breads, pastas, sugars - all those unhealthy refined carbs. If I overdo it on those kinds of foods, I don't feel good. If I order a sandwich at Subway, I will take a 2-3 bites with the bread (gives me the feeling of normalcy), then just eat the meat and veggies on the inside.

I was eating sugar free popsicles, starting the day after surgery. And later on, sugar free Jello. I wasn't able to eat anything else for the 1st 10 days post-op. I was so nauseated and hurting that I didn't want to eat. For the rest of the month, my meal was 1 can of Cream of Mushroom Soup per day. Frankensleeve wouldn't tolerate anything else.

The only thing close to a sugary treat I ate during the 1st 2 or 3 months, was creamy Peanut Butter. I limited myself to 1 or 2 tablespoons per day. I was trying to stay on 800 cals/day and Peanut Butter calories add up quick.

No. It did not. Can't fix what's wrong with our heads be cutting out our stomach! At some point when you're eating "normal" again for most folks, carb addiction rears it's head again. That said, it is easier to deal with and recover from for me now. I can't over eat and if I choose to binge on sugar there are unpleasant consequences, but WANT it I still do!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
