Banded May 11, 2007

Recommended Posts

I started looking on this site about 3 weeks before I was banded. It has been very helpful in answering questions I had concerns about.

I weighed 320 at my first visit and about 316 at surgery on 5/11/07. The surgery wasn't too rough, I went home the next day and returned to work 5/14/07. After liquid diet the first week, then liquid and soft foods the next week. The 3rd week I was able to have a larger variety of foods. I had my first fill 6/12/07. I weighed 296 then. After the fill I have not been able to tell any difference, so I have to be pay close attention or I will eat to much. I thought I would be more restricted after the fill. I have to go back in 4 weeks. I am afraid I won't lose if I don't get another fill sooner.

Congrats! You're losing and that's the main thing. Wow! Back to work in three days; did you have gas pain at all? I'll be banded tomorrow, June 18th, and I can't wait. Most people write about how nervous they are; maybe that will hit me, but so far, I'm just thinking that I can't wait to be done with the liquid diet that isn't filling me up. Were you nervous before you went in? As far as the fills go; maybe you will gain a little back, but once they get the right amount of saline in, then you can start losing in earnest. Don't beat yourself up. All the best. Barb

I wasn't nervous, I was excited like you and ready to get started. I didn't have much gas pain at all. I was sore the first three or four days. I wasn't told to go on the liquid diet, but I did cut back and lost 4 pounds before surgery. I followed the Doc's orders when I was released. The first day home was an adjustment in the way I sat down and got up due being sore. I am self employed, so I felt compelled to go to work right away. I think if I worked for someone else I may have taken at least one day off. I took some liquid pain meds the first and second day I was home, that was all I needed. I feel I was lucky and was in good hands, everything went off without any problems.

Are you getting the surgery in the U. S.? I had mine done close to Beaumont, Texas, (SE Texas) about 30 min. from home. Having the fill was surprisingly easy. My band will hold 10 cc's the Doc put in 3 cc's. I fell no restriction. About 2weeks after surgery I could't eat much at one time and lost weight fast. I guess may be a little impatient. Hope everything goes well for you! I have no regrets!

Ken, I appreciate your lengthy reply. I have a friend who is a traveling nurse who lives in Beaumont. She stayed the summer in Vermont, and then was off to Alaska; she wanted to see snow. She got her wish. Guess what? She's back in Texas now! Hope all is still well with you. B Simoes

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
