Finished a 5k this morning!

Recommended Posts

I signed up for the FroYo5k a couple of weeks before surgery, and today was the day! There were a lot of people there and a ton of strollers, but in the areas where the course opened up, I ran. Not fast, but consistently. I would say I maybe ran just under half the total course. And it felt really good. My feet didn't hurt, my shins didn't burn, I was able to maintain my breathing, and I finished in less than 50 minutes! It's so much easier to move this body without an extra 52 lbs to slow me down and crush my knees. Now I feel a lot more confident about preparing for the Disneyland Half Marathon later this year. post-246023-14305895631938_thumb.jpg

Isn't it a great feeling! Well done. I was 57 when I did my first 5k and felt such a buzz! Unfortunately, getting older means I am getting slower not faster! At 57 I did it in 35 minutes, by 63 it was 45 mins. if I did another I hate to think what it wouid be!!!! But I actually don't plan any more!

Being younger, you are going to find you do better and better!

Wow! Just seen you are only 4 weeks post-op! Wow!!!!!!!!!

Yeah I'm signed up for a 10k next weekend but I'm skipping it. I don't quite feel ready for that and the time requirement isn't as lax as this one. I hate to not do it but I need to make sure I'm healed well or it could be a bad day.

It was a good feeling to get out there today and finish and feel good the whole way through! Thanks for the kind words!

The Disneyland half marathon. It's during Labor Day weekend. I don't believe the 5Ks have a pace requirement and if they do it's very lax. The 5Ks are kid friendly and a lot of people even do them with strollers. We did the Tinkerbell 5K last year and finished in about an hour we were just walking. The 10k and half marathons they require a 16:00 mile pace. I'm going to try to train at about a 12 or 13 min mile. I don't care if I'm dead last, I just want to finish.

That is a big goal of mine! I've been training for about 7 weeks now. Not quite sure when I'll be brave enough to actually run one yet.

I suppose I should make a goal and just pick one and just do it!

Congrats! You are an inspiration!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
