Reflux or eating too fast?

Recommended Posts

Hi all! I am 3.5 weeks post op with my sleeve and it's been pretty easy going....until now. No matter what I eat, how much, or when, I feel like food is stuck in my esophagus. When I go to bed it feels like it is coming back up. I take my famotidine 20mg 2Xs a day but it doesn't help it. Any advice? Am I eating too fast or is it just reflux? Can I take stuff on top of my RX, like tums? Help!

What food stage are you at? It may be a matter of eating too fast. Others have also found that walking after eating aides in digestion. If you think it is acid related you can speak to your doctor about adjusting the dosage. That may be more advisable than adding things on your own.

I am in phase 3. It doesn't really feel like acid just food. It's very uncomfortable for hours after and then it's time to eat again.

I'm not sure what Phase 3 is for you. Purees? Soft foods? Either way it may be eating too fast. Early on we have to eat super slow. Try waiting a minute between bites and walking after eating.

Phase 3 for me is pureed foods. I just started it Tuesday and continue it until June 2nd. Dr suggested eating too fast as well but it's hard to eat slow when it's basically liquid. I will try your suggestions, thanks so much!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
