April 30 surgery update from hospital room.

Recommended Posts

I'm so glad it is done and I'm finally in the other side. Lots of pain. Doc told Steve my band was a mess. Worst one he ever saw! My stomach was getting pull up through it and was close to closing off my stomach. He said I would have been in hospital having it removed soon anyway. So scary! I am so glad I did it this way instead. He said he usually pulls the cutoff part of stomach in one piece. Mine was in pieces. I took first walk at midnight. It went well. Going for upper GI this morning. Then should be able to start fluids. No nausea so far but they have me on meds and patch.

Best wishes to you. You are going to do great! Those bands aren't for everyone. Sure wasn't for me. I am so much better off with the sleeve then the band. Good riddance.

Great news. It is scary to think that you could have ended up in an emergency situation with the band. Hope your recovery continues and is Uneventful!

I'm home after two nights in the hospital. Feel like I was severely beaten in my abdomen with a two by four. I get a lot of pain in my shoulders I assume is gas. I am not a bit hungry. Finding it hard to get fluids in. It take 15 min to drink 1-2 oz. I am still sleeping a lot. So very hard to get everything in.

The nurse told us while watching TV to sip during every commercial break. It helped keep me on track to get the fluids in

One week and one day out. No more pain. Never had nausea. I can't stand Protein Shakes now. I am using GENEPRO to get my Protein in. Mixing it diet juice or creamy Soups. I'm not hungry at all. I slept on my side again last night which was heavenly.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
