When can I have wine? Lol

Recommended Posts

I'm 1 week post op, and today is our 10 yr wedding anniversary. I really want to have a glass of wine but worried it's too soon. What's your thoughts?

People on here say 1 year. They also say that the alchohol absorbs very quickly. I would say no as you are healing now.

It's too soon. And it probably wouldn't feel good anyway. Most doctors recommend waiting 6 months. And after that, only in extreme moderation. When we have WLS, we all need to learn to Celebrate in different ways. Birthdays, anniversaries, and holidays are no longer reasons to eat and drink whatever we want. I won't lie, the first few are tricky. But, if you stick to your program, they get easier. Once you detox from all the old foods, it becomes much easier to resist them. And soon you begin to feel so virtuous about making good choices, that the simple act of resisting the food and drink you used to have becomes motivation in itself. And as people see you doing it, they are impressed and (hopefully) give you positive feedback. Good luck, you can do this!!!

I'm on 3 weeks and next week right before I

Make 1 month I have a celebration also. I've been thinking about it. Maybe adding a shot of vodka to my nectar orange Protein? Let me know PLeASe if you decide to go for it. Maybe I might just have a glass of wine instead. Looking forward to hear from you.

There are plenty of threads on here that talk about this...the soonest in I've seen is 8 weeks with doctor's permission for a special occasion. I am curious as well. What I am interested in is - aside from the accelerated affect of alcohol - what are the true risks?

The things I have seen alluded to - by my interpretation- and I am not 100% sure is

1) the stomach itself remains swollen for 4-5 weeks?

2) subjecting the stomach to anything so harsh so early is a risk of ulcer?

3) Of course, extra un needed calories as well as poor decision making

I would love to hear the specifics- I always operate better with the facts.

I have decided to wait at least 8 weeks and to discuss it with my doctor before doing anything.

I do know there are people who enjoy drinks every week on here - and I have a regular night out that I would like a glass of wine also- but for now tea, Decaf lattes, etc are doing just fine for me.

I had some wine about four weeks out. I had a few sips and then really didn't want more. It made me feel more normal at least

At this point I've had a few drinks and honestly, I have never felt it hit me sooner or that I absorbed it faster. It felt completely normal to me.

With that said, a week out---you are still on full liquids, no? At four weeks I was on full foods so I felt I had had some time learning how my sleeve reacted to things.

Well.......I ended up going to dinner and having a little chicken tortilla Soup (only liquid) and a Margarita on the rocks! I probably shouldn't have, but I did and I didn't have any problems at all and I'm over that craving.

I know it wasn't in my best interest, but it's done, and I suffered no problems.

Thanks for your feedback although, I'm a bad listener I guess ????

Glad you had no ill effects. My surgery was in November, 2014. I am someone who has never been a big drinker, however, I always had a wine cooler during the Super Bowl. I decided to give it a try and had no problems with it at all. My thinking is that this is something that is variable from person to person. Obviously moderation is important and listening to the signals your body gives.

@@FlabbyNat glad to hear it was a success and very glad no ill effects. Like I said- I saw what seemed to be allusions toward bad effects but nothing substantiated. Oh - and Happy Anniversary!

My surgeon said it was fine to have a drink after one week but to aware of the empty calories and also it hitting you harder. I occasionally have a small glass of rosé diluted with Water and ice and it has gone down fine with no bad side effects. Your right it is nice to feel normal when out socialising!

I love red wine. I have been wondering also when I would be able to have some again. I am sure it is too soon but wondering how it went for you. Dr. Hollis really didn't provide a whole lot of information as far as long term.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
